For Hasti Shahdad and Nicole Romero Recinos, graduating from high school represented far more than an academic milestone.

Shahdad fled Afghanistan with her parents in 2021 and Recinos left her parents and younger brother in Guatemala at age 14 to live with relatives in Bedford and pursue a better education.

Now graduates of John Jay and Fox Lane high schools, the two young women are preparing for college—and reflecting on the sacrifice, resilience and hope that brought them here.
