Safe Kids Missoula Coalition is comprised of local safety experts and volunteers dedicated to protecting children from preventable injury.

Safe Kids Missoula, a local Coalition of Safe Kids Worldwide, was established in 1991. It has been led by Foundation for Community Health since 2014. The Coalition includes more than 30 safety experts and volunteers from nonprofit and government agencies dedicated to protecting children from unintentional injury-- the number one cause of death to children in the United States. Since 1988, Safe Kids Worldwide and its local coalitions have helped reduce the U.S. childhood death rate from unintentional injury by 60%. Safe Kids Missoula addresses issues identified by Coalition members and state and local statistics as safety priorities for western Montana families. We work together to increase awareness and create safer environments with the goal of preventing traffic injury, concussion, poisoning, child gun access and more. Safe Kids Missoula delivers hands-on education and take-action information through:
- Child Passenger Seat Checks
- Community Safety Events
- Educational Sessions
- Safe Kids Fair

Fireplace safety is important to consider as the warmth of your fireplace brings family and friends together this holiday season! It's important to remember that fireplaces can reach extreme temperatures! Here are some essential tips to remember as cold weather approaches:

-Keep children and pets at a distance.
-Check for a safety screen barrier.
-Leave 3 feet between fireplace and flammable objects.
-Install a carbon monoxide detector for gas fireplaces.
-Don't leave fires unattended!
-Read all safety instruction manuals for gas fireplaces.

Halloween Trunk or Treat Safety 🎃🚗 Keep your family safe this Halloween season whether they're Trick-or-Treating or Trunk-or-Treating! Remember to watch for kids and be extra cautious in the parking lot to prevent back-overs. Here are some tips:

⚪ Before you get in the car and start it up, walk all the way around the parked vehicle to make sure children are not under or behind it.

⚪ Firmly hold the hand of each young child with you when around moving vehicles, driveways, parking lots and sidewalks. Safety first so we can all enjoy the treats! 🍬✨

This week is National Bus Safety Week. This observance serves as a powerful reminder of the shared responsibility among drivers, students, parents, caregivers, educators, and communities to ensure that every child’s journey to and from school is safe.

- Slow down and prepare to stop when yellow warning lights flash.
- Stop when red lights flash and the STOP arm extends.
- Stay alert for students boarding, exiting, or crossing.
- Remain stopped until the red lights stop flashing, the STOP arm retracts, and the bus begins moving. Know and follow your state’s school bus stopping laws.

A few moments of patience can protect a child’s future. Make the stop that matters.

Between candy buckets, visiting relatives and busy kitchens, October and November get hectic, and curious little hands find everything. 🍬

Here’s a number worth saving in your phone right now: 800-222-1222.

That’s the national Poison Help line, and it connects Montana families with poison experts. It’s free, confidential and open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. You can call for questions big and small, like “Is this poisonous?” or “My toddler just swallowed something.” No judgment, just fast, helpful answers. 💙

A few things to keep in mind this season:
✅ Keep medications, vitamins and any cannabis products or edibles up and away, out of sight and reach.
✅ Check candy before kids dig in, especially for homemade treats from people you don’t know, open packaging, and anything that you are unsure about.
✅ Save the number in your phone and post it on the fridge so the babysitter and grandparents have it too.

October 18th-24th is National Teen Driver Safety Week!

With over 5,000 people killed in crashes involving at least one young driver in 2024, it’s important to get involved in teen driving education because crashes involving young drivers impact people of all ages. The NSC team has created a free toolkit for you to help teen drivers stay safe on the road: nsc.org/NTDSW.
