Happy ! We love wilderness for many reasons, one of them being the habitat it provides for a diverse range of plants and living creatures. Here's a cute pine martin making an appearance on an SWS field visit to Lake Chelan-Sawtooth Wilderness. 🥹 Are you getting out into the wilderness this Memorial Day weekend??

Last week, wilderness professionals from across the state of California came to Weaverville to attend sessions on wilderness law, policy, and field skills at the 2026 California Wilderness Ranger Academy.

Personnel from U.S. Forest Service Bureau of Land Management - California as well as partners from 8 other nonprofits all came together to learn and reconnect as a wilderness community. Sessions included crosscut saw sharpening demonstrations and certifications, stock training, backcountry navigation, dry-stone masonry, Wilderness First Aid certification and more!

After a one-year hiatus, we were excited to help bring this important event back. It was particularly meaningful for Vick to be more involved in planning because she attended this event back in 2014, in her first year as a Wilderness Ranger and it had a big impact on her. Hopefully the same type of impact was impressed on all new attendees that we strive to fold into our wilderness community. 🥰

Missoula and the Bitterroot Valley are surrounded by millions of acres of pristine wildlands—but we’ve all seen the trailheads packed and the pressure building on the landscapes we call home. Simply loving these places isn’t enough; keeping them wild takes more than good intentions. Montana's wild places need champions. It takes trained, skilled people and solid science to do the unglamorous work required to ensure these lands stay healthy and intact for our future generations.

The Society for Wilderness Stewardship is a small Missoula-based team with a big reach, training the land managers and next-generation stewards who protect local treasures like the Rattlesnake, the Missions, and the Anaconda-Pintler. In 20 years, we’ve worked in 350+ wilderness areas across the country and mentored 103 young professionals into conservation careers. We’ve earned multiple national awards for our work, and we keep administration lean so 98¢ of every dollar goes straight to protecting wild places.

This April 30–May 1, we’re part of Missoula & Bitterroot Gives. It’s 26 hours for our community to show up for the causes that make this place worth living in. We’d love your support in turning local love into measurable results.
