We had so much fun at our annual volunteer picnic BBQ last week! With a Crocktober twist, the weather was perfect for burgers and home cooked sides. Shoutout to Drew, our Food Logistics Assistant, for the lovely banjo performance as well! ICA has over 200 volunteers a month, so it’s a priority that we recognize their hard work! Thank you volunteers for keeping ICA going day in and day out. 💛

It's World Mental Health Day! ICA has been lucky to partner with Relate Counseling Center for nearly a decade, providing free therapy sessions to ICA clients once a week. Relate provided 122 sessions between October 2024 - September 2025. Food insecurity is considered a psychosocial stressor that negatively impacts mental health, leading to increased levels of psychological disorders such as anxiety, depression, shame, and stress (Ejiohuo et al., 2024).

These sessions are so important for our clients who might not be able to seek mental health support outside of ICA. Thank you Relate Counseling Center for the vital services you provide. Mental health matters. 💛

We have had such an incredible amount of rescue produce this summer! Thanks to generous farmers at Hopkins and Minnetonka Farmers Markets, we've rescued 2,838 pounds of produce. This was collected by a group of wonderful Farmers Market volunteers, most who volunteered with ICA during Operation Metro Surge and were eager to make an impact during the summer.

Garden produce is still coming in during October - we've received 11,471 pounds so far! This comes from community gardens by local congregations, plots by master gardeners, and backyard gardens right in the West Metro. For comparison, we had 6519 pounds of garden produce donations in 2025 - an over 75% increase! With rising grocery prices, this large amount of produce being donated is a massive hit with ICA families. Everyone loves the variety and choice! Thank you to all who have donated fruits and vegetables this summer. Together, we can create a healthy and stable community for all.

Some ICA staff members got the chance to visit Vanguard Renewables in River Falls, WI, the composting facility we work with! This anaerobic digestion and depackaging facility has been a wonderful relationship for ICA that started this summer. This facility and process greatly reduces the time volunteers and staff spend on depackaging food rescue, increases our sustainability impact and reduces even more food waste. The facility uses anaerobic digestion to turn food waste into renewable energy. Featured behind the group is a 3 million gallon tank full of a complex system that positively impacts the surround community by producing renewable natural gas!
