Background of Sha’arim
Sha'arim was established 19 years ago to address the unmet need of inclusion of children and adults with special needs in the Minneapolis Jewish community. Over the past 19 years the program expanded both in the area of education and guided social activities to include children and young adults with moderate to severe special needs. Sha'arim has been in the forefront of innovative programming with the expansion of Darkaynu, our alternative Hebrew school experience, and Friends 'N Fun, our guided social interaction program for children and adults, to further enrich the lives of children and young adults with special needs and continue to create an inclusive community. With a solid structure in place for both Jewish education and guided social interaction, it is now time to focus on meaningful and respectful employment opportunities for our adult population. The opening of The Thrift Shoppe is the natural progression of furthering inclusion in our community.
