Help Shelter For Life Improve Crop Production with a Natural, Effective Solution!

What we want to do: Shelter For Life is launching a vermiculture microbusiness in Afghanistan, using earthworms to produce high-quality organic fertilizer that dramatically improves soil health, boosts crop yields, and replaces expensive, imported synthetic fertilizers.

Why this matters: Many Afghan farmers struggle with exhausted soils and rising fertilizer costs. Vermiculture brings the land back to life and supports healthier crop yields without relying on expensive, imported synthetic fertilizers. In time, the project will provide sustainable income for entrepreneurs who will produce and sell nutrient-rich vermicompost. Vermiculture offers a simple, organic solution that’s costs little, works quickly, and is locally produced.

Why this works: This is a practical model that works. SFL has already used this approach in The Gambia where farmers are seeing drastically better growth, improved soil quality, and meeting the needs of the whole community.

LIFFT-Cashew Project EQUIPS THE CASHEW INTERPROFESSION (ICAS)!

As part of ongoing efforts to strengthen the cashew sector, the LIFFT-Cashew Project has officially handed over a complete set of office equipment and furniture to the Interprofessional Cashew Council (ICAS) at its office in Ziguinchor.

This strategic investment is expected to significantly enhance the Council’s capacity to fulfill its mandate of coordinating and promoting the cashew value chain.

By improving the working environment and providing modern operational tools, the support contributes to more effective governance, stronger collaboration among stakeholders, and the long-term sustainability of the sector.

Empowering Farmers with Real-Time Market Access!

For decades, farmers across The Gambia have worked tirelessly but have been held back by limited access to timely market data.

On July 14th, 2025, the CROP-H Project, implemented by Shelter for Life International, launched a nationwide training in the North Bank Region — a major milestone in empowering farmers through technology.

Led by our Market Platform and Network Specialist, this training equipped 250+ farmers with the tools and knowledge to access real-time market information and take charge of their pricing and market opportunities.

Together, we’re building stronger communities and brighter futures for Gambian farmers. As we expand across the country, CROP-H is paving the way for a new era — one where every farmer is connected, every harvest counts, and every voice is heard.

Collaboration for Cashew Sector Growth!

Shelter for Life, through the LIFFT-Cashew project, recently held a handover ceremony in Guinea-Bissau to submit the Warehouse Receipt System (WRS) law to the Ministry of Economy for registration with the Council of Ministers — a key milestone in strengthening the country’s cashew sector.

This initiative began in 2021, when the LIFFT-Cashew project partnered with the Ministry of Trade and Industry to develop a law on the Warehouse receipt System. The aim was to promote good governance in the cashew sector while supporting producers with improved systems for storage, transparency, and access to finance.

The LIFFT-Cashew project constructed and rehabilitated several storage facilities across key cashew-producing areas, improving infrastructure to store cashew products from harvest to market. These efforts are helping reduce post-harvest losses and enabling farmers to access fairer market opportunities.

The final report was submitted to the Ministry of Trade and Industry in 2022, laying the foundation for a stronger and more structured cashew value chain.
