in 1920, the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution was ratified, granting women the right to vote. Today marks the 106th anniversary of this monumental moment in American history.

DAR member Febb Ensminger Burn played a pivotal role in its passage. Her son, Congressman Harry T. Burn, was prepared to vote against the amendment, and the outcome hinged on his decision. Just before the vote, he received a letter from his mother urging him to change course: "Hurrah, and vote for suffrage!" she wrote, encouraging him to "be a good boy" and vote in favor at the last minute.

The next day, Congressman Burn cited his mother's advice in a speech explaining his decision to vote in favor, securing ratification and forever changing the course of American history.

Today, on the 106th anniversary of the ratification of the 19th Amendment, the Minnesota State Society DAR reflects on the unwavering determination, unity, and hope that sparked this pivotal change. It reminds us that the freedoms we cherish were won through incredible courage—and that safeguarding these rights is our collective duty.

We honor the trailblazers of progress, celebrate their achievements, and commit ourselves to continue their legacy. Together, we can keep pushing forward!

Applications are now open for the 2026–2027 DAR Historic Preservation Grants! 🏛️

Each year, the DAR provides funding to chapters and local nonprofits working to preserve historic sites, safeguard documents, and protect cultural treasures in communities across the country.

One recent recipient: The historic Harrisville Train Depot was built in 1901 and is one of few remaining passenger train depots in Michigan’s Northern Lower Peninsula. Situated within viewing distance of Lake Huron, and alongside a working rail line, it’s a true forgotten treasure tucked away within the City of Harrisville. The depot is constructed of locally sourced cut limestone and was designed by esteemed architects in the Richardsonian Romanesque style. At 125 years old, the Depot's cut stone building is vulnerable to weather damage and other issues. This grant allowed the Friends of the Harrisville Train Depot to stabilize the roof structure and complete strategic interior work which was a key priority to bring the structure to baseline preservation before further damage was incurred.

On this day in 1782, General George Washington introduced the Badge of Military Merit, now known as the Purple Heart, to honor all soldiers for "any singularly meritorious action," regardless of rank, demonstrating his vision of a country that valued sacrifice, service, and merit over pedigree.

Made of purple cloth and hand-stitched, Washington personally recorded the names of early recipients to ensure their deeds were remembered. Although the award fell out of use after the Revolution, it was revived in 1932 during the bicentennial of Washington's birthday and officially became the Purple Heart, honoring those wounded or killed in action and reflecting Washington's belief in recognizing noteworthy ordinary soldiers.

Today, we pause to honor and reflect on the courageous heroes throughout American history who suffered wounds or gave their lives in the service of our nation. The Minnesota State Society Daughters of the American Revolution expresses our deep gratitude for their unwavering bravery, resilience, and love for our country.

Their sacrifices will forever inspire us, and we will always remember their selfless service. 🇺🇸💜

Huzzah and congratulations to the Saint Croix River Valley Chapter on its dedication of a DAR America 250! Patriot Marker last weekend at the Stillwater Veterans Memorial in one of Minnesota’s oldest and most historic cities. This significant project celebrates both the United States of America’s 250th anniversary and the chapter’s 20th anniversary.

Thank you to all of the DAR members of the Saint Croix River Valley Chapter for seeing this outstanding project through and honoring the sacrifices made by the courageous Patriots of the Revolutionary War! Thanks as well to the Veterans Memorial of Stillwater, Minnesota, for welcoming this new marker and everyone who attended the ceremony!

During WWII, these brave women took to the skies—ferrying aircraft, testing planes, and training pilots. Their courage broke barriers and laid the groundwork for those who followed. Today, we honor their service, their sacrifice, and the inspiring spirit they shared.

Today, we commemorate the founding of the US Coast Guard, which was established on this day in 1790. For over 230 years, the US Coast Guard has been a dedicated protector of our waters and a lifeline for those in need. Their mission exemplifies remarkable courage and dedication.

The Minnesota State Society Daughters of the American Revolution pays tribute to these brave men and women who continue to safeguard the freedoms that our ancestors fought to secure. Huzzah for 236 years of service, honor, and commitment to duty! ⚓🇺🇸🎉
