AABC Foundation AABC Foundation supports the advancement of the AABC birth center model across the U.S. Learn more, get involved, and support our work.

We raise funds for education, scholarships, & research to strengthen birth center care & expand access for families. The birth center is a homelike facility, operating with a health care system. Our mission is to provide membership, training, standards, and most importantly support this birthing option. Birth Centers are based on the wellness model of pregnancy and birth. Birth centers are guided

by principles of prevention of complication, sensitivity to the needs of the individual family, safety for both mother and baby, appropriate use of medical intervention, and cost effective care. Birth centers provide family-centered care for healthy women before, during, and after normal pregnancy, labor, and birth. As a Foundation, we seek to support the birth center model in the United States by raising funds to support Birth Center accreditation, midwifery training, attendance at "how to start a birth center" workshops, and accessibility to Birth Centers.

We are almost at the finish line for Spring It On! and we want to take a moment to thank our amazing community.

Together, this incredible community didn’t just complete Spring It On!, you showed up for one another and for birth centers across the country.

At the heart of this year’s theme, Meet Me at the Crossroads, was the idea that when we come together, powerful things happen and this community proved that every single day.

And none of this would have been possible without the generous support of our sponsors. Their commitment helps fuel this movement and expand access to respectful, evidence-based birth center care.

A heartfelt thank you to our sponsors:

We’re proud to spotlight our Spring It On! Champion Sponsor, The Harnisch Foundation.
At the heart of the Harnisch Foundation’s work is a deep belief in the power of storytelling to shape a more just and equitable world. Through their Funny Girls program, they’re investing in the next generation of bold, creative leaders, helping girls harness humor, confidence, and voice to challenge norms and imagine new possibilities.
That same spirit of transformation is what drives the AABC Foundation. Because when families have access to safe, inclusive, midwife-led birth center care, it doesn’t just change one birth story; it changes futures. It creates a world where more people are empowered from the very beginning.
We’re so grateful to partner with an organization that believes in rewriting narratives and expanding what’s possible: for girls, for families, and for generations to come.

The AABC Birth Center Model of Care is built around five P’s that reflect who we are and how we support pregnant people. Today we are starting with the first P: People.
"People" refers to the certified and professional midwives who are specially trained in pregnancy, birth, and postpartum care. They are at the heart of the birth center model.
Midwives play a vital role in creating safe, comfortable, and empowering birth experiences. By prioritizing safety, respect, and trust, they build strong relationships with families and communities, ensuring care that is both personal and evidence-based.

Who provides care in birth centers?

Birth centers are staffed by healthcare professionals — most commonly Certified Professional Midwives, Certified Nurse-Midwives, and Certified Midwives (CMs).

Midwifery-led care emphasizes continuity, communication, and individualized support throughout pregnancy, birth, and postpartum.
Birth centers operate within professional standards and maintain collaborative relationships with hospitals and medical specialists. When higher levels of care are needed, established transfer protocols support coordinated care.

Transparency about credentials and systems helps families feel confident in their care choices.

Why do midwifery-led birth center care models matter?

Midwifery-led birth center care is structured around continuity, communication, and relationship-based support throughout pregnancy, birth, and postpartum.
These models operate within professional standards and maintain coordinated relationships with hospitals and specialists. Established transfer protocols ensure that when higher levels of care are required, systems are already in place.

National Birth Center Study II examined outcomes within these coordinated models of care among low-risk populations, contributing to the evidence base supporting midwifery-led birth centers.
Sustaining these models requires ongoing investment in education, workforce development, and research.

Perinatal care includes pregnancy, birth, and the postpartum period.
These phases are connected, and what happens at one point can affect what happens next.

How care is delivered — through communication, continuity, and support — shapes both health outcomes and the experience of care.

To reflect on International Women’s Day, we recognize the women whose leadership strengthens birth center care every day.
Across the country, women serve as doctors, midwives, nurses, educators, administrators, researchers, and advocates. Their work supports safe, evidence-based, community-centered perinatal care.

Recognition is not symbolic. It is about visibility, respect, and acknowledging the expertise that sustains birth center models.
Women’s leadership in birth care is ongoing — not limited to one day.
