Globally, one in three women will experience violence in their lifetime – whether it manifests as gender-based violence against women, trafficking, exploitation, or as a weapon of war. Beyond their experiences of violence, women generally face obstacles in obtaining justice and reparations due to systematic discrimination within the legal and justice systems.

One of our priorities was to advocate for women and girls' rights in Tanzania, alongside our partner, Legal Human Rights Centre. Together, we informed government delegates about violations like forced and early marriage, female ge***al mutilation, and obstetric violence, asking for strong recommendations to change laws, investment in health services, and expansion of prevention efforts. At the heart of these priorities is our goal: the recognition that women’s rights are human rights, and that advancing safety, justice, and equality for women advances human rights for everyone.

Suriname will undergo its 4th-cycle Universal Periodic Review this November. While the government has made progress on some of the LGBTIQ+ recommendations it received in the previous cycle, the government still needs to adopt legislative protections for LGBTIQ+ people.

During its last review in 2021, Suriname received and supported multiple recommendations to allocate resources in its national budget to the protection of the rights of LGBTIQ+ people. With significant social stigma against LGBTIQ+ people, a risk of systematic exclusion of LGBTIQ+ youth, and no legal provisions permitting equal marriage, there is a large gap the government needs to fill.

For its upcoming review, The Advocates for Human Rights, along with Surinamese and regional partners, have suggested twelve new recommendations for Suriname. We hope to see progress made on comprehensive legislative protections, consistent enforcement of existing protections, and the removal of social and institutional barriers that prevent LGBTIQ+ people from the full enjoyment of their human rights.
