Attention all Native nations, the deadline is approaching!

The deadline to participate in the Native nations survey is October 16th, 2026.

Every Tribal government has different priorities for its fiscal data, and different requirements for how that data should be shared and stewarded. This survey is a collaboration between the Center for Indian Country Development (CICD) and Tribal governments across the United States.

The goal is to equip Tribes with high-quality public finance data. The survey provides participating Tribal governments with customized data reports to inform their decision-making—and enables CICD to provide research-based insights that advance understanding of tribal economies. We’re excited to uplift Heather Fahey (Mohawks of the Bay of Quinte), a Cohort 15 Rebuilder, and the beautiful work she’s doing through her community action plan project, The Sacred Medicine Garden.

Some of our staff recently watched Heather present about the project at M Health Fairview University of Minnesota Medical Center – West Bank Campus, where she is helping bring Indigenous healing practices into the care environment.

The Sacred Medicine Garden is a MINO Grant initiative that will create a space where patients, families, and employees can connect with sacred medicines, ceremony, Indigenous knowledge, and culturally responsive education. Guided by Indigenous knowledge keepers and cultural protocols, the garden is rooted in creating more culturally grounded, whole-person care.

We’re proud to see Heather’s leadership and vision taking root in her community. 🌱

Her work powerfully shows how Rebuilders are turning ideas into action and creating meaningful change where they live and work. Miigwech, Heather, for sharing your leadership and helping create space for Indigenous healing and knowledge to flourish. 💚

Orange Shirt Day 2026

Orange Shirt Day helped start and continues to support conversations about residential and boarding schools on an international scale, enabling meaningful discussion of the impacts and legacies of the Boarding School Era. It’s a day of remembrance for the lives taken and the resilience of survivors.

Why an orange shirt?

Orange is the color of the shirt that was taken from 6-year old Phyllis Newstad on her first day of residential school. The orange shirt is a symbol of the stripping away of culture, freedom and self-esteem experienced by Indigenous children over generations.

An orange shirt is a reminder of the past and a call to action.

Both the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day take place on September 30. We can do something to move toward healing.

Hey Turtle Mountain community! Election season is in full swing, and you can hear directly from the candidates at a couple of upcoming candidate forums. Candidate forums give voters space to learn about the individuals seeking leadership roles, hear their perspectives, and ask questions about the future of their Nation.

Turtle Mountain College will host an afternoon candidate forum on September 28th, and Native Governance Center will moderate an evening forum on October 6th at Sky Dancer, providing community members with multiple opportunities to engage. We hope you can make it to one or both events! During candidate forums, community members can submit questions and hear directly from candidates running for Chairman and District Representatives 1-4. If you're a community member of the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Tribe, we encourage you to attend in person or tune in to KEYA radio for both forums.

Calling all Native nations!

The deadline to participate in the current round of the Native nations survey is October 16, 2026.

Every Tribal government has different priorities for its fiscal data, and different requirements for how that data should be shared and stewarded. This survey is designed to accommodate those differences while empowering Tribes to shape their participation around the questions and data that matter most to them.

We wanted to highlight this important work to defend data sovereignty and encourage folks to visit https://www.minneapolisfed.org/indiancountry/survey-of-native-nations to learn more.

NGC has been out and about!

Community Engagement Specialist Nathaniel Ruleaux attended the Indigenous Peoples Summit in Omaha, NE, and delivered a keynote presentation on Native Nation Rebuilding. He also co-facilitated a session with Rebuilder Cohort 15 member Justin Alexander.

During the same week, Program Director Michaela Madrid and Leadership Development Program Manager Jessica Glidden attended the United Tribes Technical College Tribal Leaders Summit in Bismarck, ND. Michaela presented on our recent work with the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library Native Nations Advisory Committee; Jessica hosted a Rebuilders alumni meal; and we had a table throughout the event.

It was a packed week, and we truly enjoyed reconnecting with past program participants, making new connections, sharing our work, and learning more about the incredible things happening in our region. Thank you to everyone whose hard work made these events happen.

Technology of Participation (ToP) Training hosted at Waḳaƞ Ṭípi Awanyankapi, Saint Paul, MN

Ashleigh & Cree from NGC’s Community Engagement team learned practical tools for enabling highly energized, productive, inclusive, and meaningful participation.

We learned more about three facilitation methods at the core of ToP:
💬Focused Conversation
👍🏼Consensus Workshop
⚡Action Planning Process

We’re so grateful for the opportunity to be educated by amazing facilitators (shout out to Dawn & Tiffany) alongside other engaged learners in such a beautiful space! Thank you to our hosts, facilitators, and peers! We look forward to the next opportunity to grow our skills.
