For the final story in our 20 Stories for 20 Years campaign, we’re looking ahead through the eyes of someone helping shape the next chapter of SecureFutures.

Current Vice Chairperson and incoming Board Chairperson Robert LaGrant first joined SecureFutures as a volunteer Money Coach in 2018. Since then, he’s seen firsthand how financial education can strengthen not only individual students, but entire communities.

As we celebrate 20 years of impact, we’re grateful for leaders like Robert who believe in the power of financial education and opportunity, and who are committed to helping more teens build the confidence to make informed financial decisions for themselves, their families, and their futures.

Sometimes the opportunities that shape your future start with one conversation and the confidence to ask for what you need.

When Julissa joined Money Coach as a high school junior in 2023, she was navigating her first job and figuring out what to do with her paycheck.

Through the Money Coach program, she gained practical financial skills and a new way of thinking about money. A few years later, Julissa came back in a different role: as a SecureFutures intern.

Her story is a reminder that financial education doesn’t just build knowledge. It builds confidence, connections, and the ability to recognize and reach for opportunities.

Some milestones are measured in numbers. Others are measured in what becomes possible afterward.

This era was about reconnecting, rebuilding, and growing stronger than before. From returning to classrooms and reaching our 100,000th student to expanding programs, welcoming new partners, and helping prepare Wisconsin for a new chapter in financial education, these years showed what’s possible when a community believes in teens.

Today, more than 145,000 students later, that momentum continues.

From 2021 through 2025, SecureFutures focused on rebuilding and gaining momentum following the disruptions of the COVID-19 pandemic.

At this year’s Investment Conference, we had the privilege of recognizing Black Spring Foundation and honoring the legacy of Natalie A. Black, whose generous support has helped create opportunities for teens to gain the financial skills and confidence to shape their futures.

Thank you to Natalie's sister, Jennifer Westbrook, and Foundation trustees David Heck and Nathan Honson for accepting the award on Natalie’s behalf at our 18th Annual Investment Conference.
