“What he has is not curable, but it’s manageable,” says George (Georgiana) Marks of her husband, Chip Felmer, who has been diagnosed with multiple myeloma.
The Peshtigo couple is staying at Kathy’s House during Chip’s treatment at nearby Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin.
“I love it!” George says emphatically. “It’s just like a second home. We’re lucky to have it. We’re lucky to be able to stay here, and there’s no other place you could stay for the price.”
Through the generosity of donors, Kathy’s House is able to offer a subsidized room rate, making it affordable for guests to stay near the hospital for weeks or months at a time.
“They help you. And they make you feel good and at home and at ease, even when you’re hurting,” George continues. “That’s what helped me through what we’re going through.”
The couple are especially grateful for the shuttle to the grocery store and appointments, as well as the kindness of staff and volunteers who have helped them feel at home.
“I can’t say enough about how nice everybody is,” George says. “You just don’t get this anyplace else.”
For Chip, a man of few words, gratitude comes down to something simple:
“We’ve got a roof over our head and food in our belly.”
