Celebrate 50 years of the Historic Third Ward Association with Historic Milwaukee!

Join us for a guided walking tour exploring how Milwaukee’s former warehouse district transformed into one of the Midwest’s most vibrant mixed-use neighborhoods.

Since 1976, the Historic Third Ward Association has helped preserve the district’s historic character while shaping its evolution into a center for arts, culture, dining, and urban living. Along the way,discover the people, projects, and pivotal moments behind that transformation — from adaptive reuse and the Riverwalk to destinations like the Milwaukee Public Market, MIAD, and Commission Row.

You’ll also learn about the neighborhood’s layered cultural history, including the influence of Irish and Italian immigrants and Milwaukee’s LGBTQ+ community.

Tours are led by Historic Milwaukee guide Chris Rute, a licensed Wisconsin architect with extensive experience in architecture, design, and urban development.

This special tour follows the same route as Historic Milwaukee’s Historic Third Ward Tour, with a focus on the last 50 years of neighborhood history.

Are you familiar with the North Point Historic District? Maybe you’ve taken our popular tour before. Prepare to find out even more with our three-part, deep-dive over three consecutive weeks. Even if you’ve done the tour before, you’ll see new places, learn new stories, and do it at a leisurely pace. This series will happen once in June, and once in September.

Part 1 – Back Bay Mansions – This tour explores the mansions of Back Bay, along with the history of how the east side got started, early women in baseball and the arrival of cars to the neighborhood.

Part 2 – Newberry Boulevard: From Lake Park to Riverside Park – Riverside Park and Lake Park are the green jewels of the east side and Newberry Boulevard was created to showcase them, lining its widened street with homes to be envious of. This tour will stroll from Lake Park to Riverside Park along Newberry Blvd.

Part 3 – North of North Point – Beginning at the North Point Lighthouse, take a walk around Wahl, Belleview, and Lake, where the neighborhood moves north and the styles become more eclectic.

Explore the former UWM Alumni House, a striking Tudor-style residence built in 1923 for Myron T. and Gertrude MacLaren. Perched on a bluff overlooking Lake Michigan, this 25,000-square-foot mansion is one of the Midwest’s premier examples of Tudor architecture, featuring a castle-like exterior, remarkable craftsmanship, and sweeping lake views.

Guests will enjoy a self-guided tour of the home’s beautifully designed ground floor spaces while discovering its rich architectural history and historic character.

Historic Milwaukee is proud to spotlight one of our longtime collaborators, James Steeno, as we celebrate 10 years of sharing Milwaukee through our gift shop!

James is known for his vibrant neighborhood prints and iconic Milwaukee-inspired artwork that captures the spirit of the city so many of us love. From detailed sketches to layered watercolor scenes, his work celebrates Milwaukee’s architecture, history, and character in a style instantly recognizable to locals and visitors alike. Working from his home studio in Milwaukee’s Washington Heights neighborhood, James continues to create pieces inspired by the unique places and stories of our city.
