At Public Allies Wisconsin, our mission is to equip local leaders with the tools to turn their passion for justice into lasting career impact. Former Ally Sam Woods is doing exactly that!

Sam is currently a co-producer for WUWM’s Lake Effect. He recently completed a powerful, three-part investigative series titled “How to Evict Your Landlord,” which dives deep into corporate landlords in Milwaukee, tenant organizing, and the legal fight for housing accountability.

Starting his Journey as an Ally with Ex fabula, an organization dedicated to amplifying and platforming underheard voices, you can see how this heart-work has given a strong foundation for Sam’s career.

Sam’s transition from an Ally apprentice to an influential journalist perfectly captures the spirit of our program. We are incredibly proud to see an alumnus using his platform to champion equity and accountability in the place we call home.

Our Allies recently got to go behind the scenes with a tour of WUWM 89.7 FM - Milwaukee’s NPR and learned more about Lake Effect ! 🎙️✨

As future community leaders, learning how to use media and storytelling as tools for social change is so important. We loved getting a firsthand look at how the station weaves the stories of southeastern Wisconsin together to inspire and connect our region.

Here are a few of our favorite takeaways from the tour:

📻 60+ Years of History: We learned that WUWM has been a staple in Milwaukee for over 60 years, broadcasting local news alongside global programming from NPR, APM, and BBC.

👥 True Community Connection: The Lake Effect team showed us how they bring local conversations to life, focusing directly on the people, places, and organizations that shape Milwaukee every day.

⚖️ Storytelling with Integrity: It was inspiring to learn about the station’s strict code of ethics and how their award-winning journalists focus on deep regional issues to empower the public to effect real change.

A massive thank you to the team at WUWM’s team for hosting our cohort and showing us how thoughtful conversations can build a shared understanding of our world! 📻❤️

What an incredible day of growth, community, and leadership! 🌟✊

This last Friday, our current cohort stepped up to facilitate our Ally Teachbacks, and they absolutely blew the community away.

For those who joined us, you got a first-hand glimpse into exactly what the Public Allies experience is all about. Our Allies utilized their extensive, 10-month-long training to lead deeply impactful conversations on equity and community building.

More than anything, the Teachbacks were a powerful demonstration of real development in action. It showed our recent applicants and community members the immense professional and personal growth that happens during this 10-month journey—the very same development that awaits our upcoming cohort.

A huge thank you to everyone who showed up to support, listen, and learn. And an even bigger shoutout to our current Allies for sharing their expertise and reminding us what it looks like when passion meets preparation! 🛠️❤️

What a day! On May 9th, our crew headed over to Guest House Milwaukee to get our hands dirty and support the incredible work they do for our community.

We stayed busy making over 100 sandwiches and diving into their donation pantry to make sure every resource is being used to its full potential. We reorganized their stock by food type and expiration dates, even setting up a “Use First” section to help the team stay ahead.

We also made sure to set aside anything past its prime for their professional chefs to double-check, ensuring that the community gets nothing but the best while minimizing waste.

A huge, heartfelt thank you to for inviting us in and letting us see a glimpse of the “heart work” you do every single day. We’re so grateful for the partnership!

Spring cleaning isn’t just for our homes—it’s for our community, too! 🧹🌿

April was a busy month of service for our Allies as we hit the streets (and the riverbanks) to give Milwaukee a fresh start for the season. We teamed up with some incredible local partners to clear the clutter and care for the places we call home.

April 12th: Walker’s Square Neighborhood Cleanup 🏘️

We kicked things off at Zocalo Food Park with the Walker’s Square Neighborhood Association. After gearing up, our team fanned out to clear the surrounding blocks. There’s nothing like the energy of a neighborhood coming together to keep things vibrant!

April 25th: Milwaukee Riverkeeper Cleanup 🌊

Next, we headed to Harriet Tubman Park to join in restoring the area around Lincoln Creek. Let’s just say we found some... unique treasures during this spring cleaning. From old cell phones and cable parts to an entire (non-matching!) dish and cutlery set, it was a reminder of how much “hidden” waste ends up in our green spaces.

A huge THANK YOU to both Walker’s Square Neighborhood Association and Milwaukee Riverkeeper for having us. We love working alongside organizations that are just as dedicated to a cleaner, greener Milwaukee as we are. 🤝✨

As the weather gets warmer and we all spend more time outside, let’s do our part to keep our parks and neighborhoods beautiful. Remember to always dispose of your waste responsibly! ♻️🚮
