GOLDEN GATE PARK: In summer 2024, Bay Area Barns and Trails (BABT) contacted city officials about the loss of riding opportunities in Golden Gate Park after the previous equestrian concessionaire was removed. To help support future operators, we advocated for essential horse-keeping infrastructure that meets Standards of Equine Care.

BABT partnered with a local modular barn company to draft a preliminary layout for a 20-horse “Mare Motel,” including stalls with attached paddocks, hay storage, rubber mats, and turnout areas. We held several Zoom meetings with the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department (SFRPD) to explore the concept.

In late 2025, BABT funded a site walk-through below Bercut Arena with the barn company, consultants, BABT Board members, and SFRPD staff. All structures would need to be temporary/removable, and funding would have to be raised independently.

SFRPD has since decided not to move forward, citing high costs and fundraising uncertainty. While disappointed, we hope the groundwork BABT helped establish may support future efforts. If you know of an “angel donor” interested in helping bring horses and riding programs back to the park, please reach out.

WOW, what a gorgeous day for the Ridge to Bridge event!
There were about 30 riders this time, the largest equestrian turnout in many years! Huge thanks to the Bay Area Ridge Trail team for putting on such a great event! Special thanks to our equestrian ground crew —Robert, Kelly, Cheryl, and Karen— for all their help. And a big thank you to Miwok Stables for providing water for the horses! 💙🐎
