Our prevention team partners with schools across Midland County to teach kids how to stay safe and what to do if they ever experience abuse.

Throughout the year, we’ll share snippets of these lessons as reminders of the important conversations you can continue having with the children in your life. Preventing child abuse and neglect starts with education, and this program is a vital part of our mission.

Today’s focus: The 3 Types of Touch.
In this lesson, students learn about safe touch, unsafe touch, and unwanted touch and how to recognize the difference. It’s all about helping kids understand their right to personal boundaries, and empowering them to know when and how to ask for help from a safe adult.

Thanks to support from the Midland Area Youth Impact Partnership, our staff at the Midland Child Advocacy Center brings these important lessons directly into classrooms.

Child abuse and neglect can happen anywhere. It happens in our own hometown, but together, we can make a difference. Midland Child Advocacy Center’s vision is a community where all children are safe, nurtured, and protected. To achieve our vision we are empowering children to tell, we are educating our community to recognize warning signs, and we are listening when our children need us most.

The difficult truth is 102 Midland County children received forensic interviews in our 2024/25 year. We want to see that number at zero, but until it is, we will be here to support children and families navigating abuse and neglect.

Today’s focus: The 8 “Never Nevers.”
Every family has different rules and responsibilities at home, but the key takeaway from this lesson is that kids should always check in with a safe adult or have that adult present when doing any of the “Never Nevers”—even with permission.

For example, many kids go hunting, so we emphasize that they should only handle a gun with an adult’s permission and supervision. It’s all about helping kids learn safe habits and when to ask for help.
