If you are a high school senior in Bay, Midland, or Saginaw counties who is leading, serving, and bringing people together, check out this scholarship opportunity! Apply by Saturday, October 31st.

We are in the final days to apply! Applications for the 2027 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Regional Scholarships are due this Saturday, October 31.

High school seniors across Bay, Midland, and Saginaw counties: If you’re leading, serving, and bringing people together, we want to hear from you!

These scholarships recognize students who carry Dr. King’s legacy forward through a commitment to racial harmony, social justice, equality, and greater cross-cultural understanding.

Students of all ethnicities are encouraged to apply. Applicants must:

• Attend a high school in Bay, Midland, or Saginaw County.
• Have at least a 2.0 GPA.
• Plan to attend a two-year, four-year, or vocational program following graduation.

Recipients will receive at least $1,000 and be recognized at the Great Lakes Bay Regional Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration on Thursday, January 21, 2027, at 7 p.m. in Saginaw Valley State University’s Malcolm Field Theatre in Curtiss Hall.

This year’s celebration will feature keynote speaker Martin Luther King III, civil rights activist, global humanitarian, and eldest son of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The celebration is open to the public.

Through a partnership among the Midland Area Community Foundation, Bay Area Community Foundation, and Saginaw Community Foundation, these scholarships invest in young people helping build stronger, more inclusive communities.

Tonight, we’re cheering for the City Championship and your next chapter!

As Midland High School and Dow High School face off, advisers from the Midland Area Career and College Access Network, an initiative of the Midland Area Community Foundation, will be on-site with FREE food, prizes, and help completing your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

Completing the FAFSA is an important step toward making education after high school more affordable. It opens the door to consideration for state and federal financial aid that can significantly reduce, and potentially cover, tuition costs. You don’t have to navigate the process alone!

This year, we’re spotlighting stories of high school seniors who are looking to the future with the help of our Career & College Advisers.

Today we’d like you to meet Sam Grachek, Class of 2027 at Midland High School!
Sam plans to pursue a degree in Instrumental Education. He plans on getting a Master’s Degree or Doctorate Degree in this field, as his professional goal is to be a college music professor. His plan is to teach music at the high school level before transitioning to work in the college setting.

Sam is excited for the opportunity to spread the joy of music around the world, and his dream is getting to experience college while studying a passion he holds dear. He feels beyond blessed to get the chance to experience this dream.

When asked what advice he would share to other students who are figuring out their next steps, Sam shared, “Make yourself marketable and never give up. Do as much as you can while still maintaining good grades; join clubs and become a leader amongst those clubs. The field of music is one that is based on recovering from your mistakes. There will be times throughout your career that you will want to quit or drop out. Best advice I can give is a quote I hear every Friday on Midland High's morning announcements, "You determine your legacy, what will it be?" "

Thanks for sharing with us, Sam. We wish you all the very best as you complete your senior year and move into your postsecondary life!
