Applications are now open for the 2027 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Regional Scholarships!

High school seniors across Bay, Midland, and Saginaw counties, this is your opportunity to carry Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s legacy forward.

Applications are now open for the 2027 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Regional Scholarships.

These scholarships recognize graduating seniors who are making a difference through leadership, service, and a commitment to racial harmony, social justice, equality, and greater cross-cultural understanding.

Students of all ethnicities are encouraged to apply. Applicants must attend a high school in Bay, Midland, or Saginaw County, have at least a 2.0 grade point average, and plan to attend a two-year, four-year, or vocational program following graduation.

Scholarship recipients will receive an award of at least $1,000 and will be recognized at the Great Lakes Bay Regional Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration, held in partnership with Saginaw Valley State University.

Earlier this year, 15 high school seniors from across the region received scholarships for the ways they were already putting Dr. King’s values into action through leadership, community involvement, and efforts to promote racial harmony and social justice.

The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Regional Scholarships are supported through a partnership among the Midland Area Community Foundation, Bay Area Community Foundation, and Saginaw Community Foundation. Together, our community foundations are proud to invest in young people who are helping build stronger, more inclusive communities throughout the Great Lakes Bay Region.

Applications are due October 31.

If you are a senior who is leading, serving, speaking up, bringing people together, and working to improve your community, we encourage you to apply.

It’s going to be a great year!

It’s going to be a great year!

Backpacks are packed. Classrooms are ready. A new school year is here.

As students across Midland County head back to school, we’re reminded that supporting young people means showing up for them at every stage, from middle school and high school to college, career training, and beyond.

At the Midland Area Community Foundation, that support takes many forms, in addition to grantmaking:

The Midland Area Career and College Access Network works with high school students and adult learners to make postsecondary education and training more accessible. Through high school advisors, a postsecondary hub in Coleman, an adult learner team, and other resources, nearly 75% of students are now enrolling in postsecondary education, according to the most recent data collected.

Our scholarship program helps turn those plans into reality. This spring, 359 scholarships totaling approximately $1 million were awarded to help students continue their education.

The Midland Area Youth Action Council gives local students in grades 6 through 12 a real voice in philanthropy. Each year, members research community needs, volunteer, develop their own projects, and decide how to invest approximately $100,000 in programs that improve the lives of young people in Midland County.

The Midland Area Youth Impact Partnership brings together educators, nonprofits, mental health staff, and other youth-serving organizations to share resources, strengthen prevention and early intervention efforts, and promote kindness throughout our schools and community.

Education can open doors, but supporting young people goes far beyond the classroom. It means giving them resources, opportunities, a voice, and people in their corner.

To every student, educator, school staff member, parent, caregiver, and community partner beginning another school year: we’re wishing you a great first day and an even better year ahead.

Career & College Advisers play a vital role in helping Midland County students explore their options, plan for their futures, and navigate the path to postsecondary education and career success. Through one-on-one support, family engagement, and a commitment to reducing barriers, they help ensure every learner has access to opportunities beyond high school. Today, we’d like you to meet Windover High School Advisor, Evan White, in his own words.

“I remember what it was like to begin my college journey. I wish I had access to resources like this. Now I enjoy helping students by providing them with the guiding hand I wish I had.

My favorite part about this job is guiding students through the application process. It’s always fun to see the students' reaction when everything is submitted.

I wish students knew how simple it really is to apply for colleges and financial aid! Especially when you have the help of someone guiding you along the way. It’s a surprisingly fast process.

One piece of advice I would give to any student thinking about their lives after graduation, is that it’s not a one size fits all. The most important thing to focus on is continuing to further yourself by developing your skillset, whether that is by pursuing a trade, going to university, or entering the workforce.”

Thank you for all that you do, Evan!

Career & College Advisers play a vital role in helping Midland County students explore their options, plan for their futures, and navigate the path to postsecondary education and career success. Through one-on-one support, family engagement, and a commitment to reducing barriers, they help ensure every learner has access to opportunities beyond high school. Today, we’d like you to meet Midland High School Advisor, Lori Pritchard, in her own words.

“Prior to retiring, I always worked directly with middle and high school students, and that has consistently been my favorite part of education. Serving as a College & Career Advisor has allowed me to continue doing what I enjoy most—working one-on-one with students while providing guidance, encouragement, and support as they navigate important decisions about their futures. It is especially rewarding to help those who need it most.”

My favorite part of this job is working directly with students. Honestly, I enjoy every aspect of being a College & Career Advisor, but the most rewarding moments start at the beginning of the school year when I sit down one-on-one with students who are still trying to figure out their plans after high school. Whether they're considering college, the military, a trade, or entering the workforce, it's incredibly fulfilling to help them explore their options and build a plan that fits their goals and interests. Students are often grateful to have someone who will listen, answer their questions, and guide them through such an important decision. Knowing that I can provide encouragement, clarity, and support during this pivotal time in their lives is what makes this work so meaningful to me.”

One piece of advice I consistently give students is to focus on taking one step forward at a time. Many students become overwhelmed by the pressure of deciding what comes after high school, and that uncertainty can sometimes keep them from moving forward. I encourage them to break the process into smaller, manageable steps. Each completed application, campus visit, conversation, or career exploration activity builds momentum and confidence.

I also remind students to never stop investing in themselves. Whether it's earning a certification, developing a new skill, gaining work experience, or continuing their education, every skill and credential they acquire makes them more marketable, more employable, and better prepared for future opportunities. Those are investments in themselves that no one can ever take away.

I wish more students and families knew that they don't have to navigate the college and career planning process alone. There are so many resources available... from exploring careers and colleges to completing financial aid applications, and finding scholarships. My goal is to walk alongside students through each step of the process. Sometimes all it takes is one conversation to help a student feel more confident and realize they have options they hadn't considered.”

Thank you for all that you do, Lori!
