💙 This is incredible! We’re so proud of these MPS students who are making a real impact beyond the classroom; spreading joy through birthday kits and now expanding to meal kits for local families.
Thank you for helping make our community stronger every day! 👏
MPS students aren't just showing out in the classroom: they're also making a difference every day in our community.
Students Mirabel Hnizda (far left) of H. H. Dow High School and Alli Thompson (far right) of Midland High School are part of Girl Scout Troop 50834 along with homeschool junior Brianna Tomczak (center). Since they were kindergarteners in 2014, this troop has been volunteering with the HELP Food Pantry located within Memorial Presbyterian Church. The HELP Food Pantry is one of 8 pantry locations in the Midland County Food Assistance Network (MCFAN). The girls' specialty is birthday kits!
Each birthday kit contains cake mix, frosting, birthday candles, bright napkins or plates, and a few party supplies. When a client calls a Midland food pantry to schedule an appointment to receive groceries, they can indicate that someone in the household is celebrating a birthday to receive a birthday kit.
When a family faces food insecurity, they are often forced to make financial decisions, such as cutting back on nonessential items like a birthday dessert. These kits ensure everyone in our community feels special on their birthday!
But why stop here? Now, these students are expanding their impact by helping HELP Food Pantry to create easy-to-make meal kits using pantry staples and simple recipes for local families.
Ensuring our students are locally and globally connected is one of the key pillars of our Profile of an MPS Graduate. We’re proud of the way our students continue to step up, serve others, and make Midland a better place for everyone. 👏
