Peer Power East High School graduate Charlie McVean founded the program in 2004. The program was an immediate success and swiftly evolved into Peer Power.

Peer Power is a non-profit organization that recruits high-performing high school and college students to tutor younger public school students in a variety of subjects to improve their standardized test scores and college or job readiness. A successful entrepreneur and dedicated philanthropist, Charlie had grown increasingly troubled by the poor performance of his hometown’s public schools and believed that the American free enterprise system held the remedy. Combining a performance-based compensation model with the powerful effects of peer groups, he launched his unique student-to-student tutoring method at East.

This week, we're spotlighting Success Coach Charelle Cobbins!💙

Charelle always makes her students feel safe, supported, and ready to reach their goals. As our Success Coaches help students grow, they get to grow too; practicing communication, teamwork, leadership, and adaptability along the way.

Together, we build a better 901!💙

Our CEO, Cortney Richardson, is joining fellow Memphis leaders on October 9 for Habitat for Humanity of Greater Memphis’ 2026 CEO Build. Together, they’ll help build a Memphis family a place to call home while supporting affordable homeownership in the community we love.

We’ve seen the great things that happen when we keep showing up for one another, and we’re proud to carry that commitment beyond the classroom and join this effort to strengthen the city we call home!
