We wrapped up our final MPLOY Orientation at Westwood and TLA as students prepared for a successful summer ahead. Students received important information about professionalism, workplace readiness and program expectations. Special thanks to Lynetra C. Ross for speaking and encouraging our youth as they get ready to represent Memphis Youth Rising this summer.

From Preparation to Victory!!

Coordinator Candy Munn prepared the MOYS youth teams, Hustle & Smoke and 901 Smoke, for the 2026 Memphis in May World Championship Junior Barbecue Cooking Contest through a series of boot camps focused on grilling and dessert skills.

The training concluded with a taste-testing event where city officials and community members experienced the teams’ culinary talents firsthand.

That preparation paid off at the competition, where the teams competed in chicken drums, ribeye steak, pork chops, and desserts. Team Hustle & Smoke earned 3rd Place in the steak category in the worldwide competition.

The City of Memphis in conjunction with Councilwoman Janika White proudly honors the National Day of Prayer at Temple of Deliverance, uniting the community in faith, prayer, and purpose as we pray for our city, nation, leaders, families, and youth. Pizza for participating youth is generously sponsored by the Memphis Office of Youth Services.

🏫 PURE Academy is a nonprofit all-male private boarding high school that has been around for a decade and has recently moved to the Frayer area. They are committed to the holistic development of young men through a blend of academic excellence, practical AgriSTEM education and athletics. Under the MAP umbrella, we will have a special curriculum for 72 of their students during school time in the Fall. PURE Academy will also be a business partner for our MPLOY program in the summer in the Whitehaven area.
