“In 2020 when our family started The Food Drive, Ell was 13. She said, ‘I can help!’ and designed our logo by hand. Ever since she has delivered food, handed out meals, volunteered at all kinds of events, taken photos, helped with the website, organized fundraisers, and championed our mission in every way. The Food Drive wouldn’t exist without her. Tomorrow she graduates from Melrose High School, and we are constantly grateful for her heart and the light she brings to our work.”

We are actively seeking new donors for our Hot Meals program, in which volunteers like Susan deliver donated restaurant meals to shelters and low-income housing residences. “These meals are our residents’ favorite,” the manager of a local shelter explains. “They are grateful for everything we receive, but these are the only meals that are made just for them and that they receive while the food is still hot.” Interested in donating just 15 meals a month? Our Community Freezer at First United Methodist Church of Melrose, MA is providing an average of 130 meals on Sundays, and we're grateful to all of our community cooks! Shoutout to The Kitchen Melrose owner Julie Unger, Chef David Drew, and the "Cooking for a Cause" May 13 class for filling the freezer with beautiful "heat & eat" chicken couscous!

Our Community Freezer is open TODAY (and every Sunday) from 11:30 AM to 12:00 noon at First United Methodist Church of Melrose, MA at 645 Main Street! All are welcome to stop in and select from a wide range of free frozen "heat & eat" meals made by local community cooks. No ID or residency requirement. Enter via the front door or the ramp.

Shoutout to the Melrose Running Club for donating the extra snacks from the Melrose Run for Women! Our board member and MRC member Beth Blatchford delivered boxes of fruit & grain bars, popcorn, goldfish, and cookies to Bread of Life, where these items are very much needed!

"The House recently passed the Farm, Food, and National Security Act of 2026, bringing the country one step closer to a new farm bill. Anti-hunger advocates had hoped the House would revisit changes to SNAP, but those have remained in place. The Center on Budget and Policy Priorities estimates that one in eight participants will lose access to some food relief as a result."

The Farm Bill is a package of U.S. legislation, renewed about every five years, governing agriculture, food assistance, and conservation.

"Over the past 12 months, nearly 140,000 people, including 48,000 children, have lost SNAP benefits in Massachusetts. The organization attributes this largely to the inability of recipients to reach the DTA as well as changing eligibility requirements."

The DTA is reportedly so severely understaffed that high numbers of calls from recipients are going unanswered, with the department reportedly ignoring a whopping 81% of calls in March alone.
