The Food Drive

The Food Drive Driving food security, food rescue, & hunger relief in our community
Jana Gimenez, Executive Director

The Food Drive is a community-driven nonprofit that provides hands-on, hyperlocal solutions to hunger and food waste. We distribute rescued, surplus, and donated food in our community; divert wholesome food from landfills; and work for change in our food system. We believe that solving food insecurity, malnutrition, and waste is possible through collaboration, and that sustainable change begins in

our own neighborhoods. Jana Gimenez, Executive Director

We're thrilled and grateful to welcome Hummus Guys Products as a new food rescue donor! Each week at the end of the Melrose Farmers' Market we rescue their extra salads, even if there are only a few. Deliciousness delivered to food pantries, not landfills!

'Tis the season for back-to-school, so we're taking a moment to shout out two of our student volunteers! Melrose High School student Dylan volunteers with mom Jackie, shown here at a rescue at Wegmans, and Mystic Valley Regional Charter School student Ananya rescues from lots of donors, including Shaw's Supermarket Melrose. Huge thanks for the gift of your time!

To reserve meals, contact the organizers by email, phone or FB message by the Monday evening prior. "One critical sector of the U.S. economy has managed to escape widespread public criticism: grocery stores. Thanks to a record rise in special interest cash donations to both Democrats and Republicans, grocery-industry lobby groups have managed to keep prices high, wages low, and consumer choice limited while avoiding federal policymakers’ crosshairs."

Corporate consolidation is reshaping America’s grocery industry, driving higher food prices, limiting competition, and squeezing workers and consumers alike.

Big thanks to Camp Hillside at the Saugus Family YMCA for donating their extra food all summer! And to Kristen Kremer and the Kremer family for rescuing it! On Fridays they delivered to the Housing Families Inc. motel shelter in Malden, and on a couple of Wednesdays the surplus went to the Kelly House in Wakefield. Filling the plates of neighbors instead of landfills!
