Friends of the Fells

Friends of the Fells Promote the conservation, appreciation, and sustainable enjoyment of the Middlesex Fells Reservation.

The Middlesex Fells Reservation, often referred to simply as the Fells, is a 3,400-acre Massachusetts state park located in Malden, Medford, Melrose, Stoneham, and Wi******er. The park is managed by the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR), and is part of the Metropolitan Park System of Greater Boston. The Friends of the Middlesex Fells helps to preserve the Fells for visi

tors. Our mission is to enhance the natural and historic resources of the Fells. In this effort the Friends assist the DCR in educating the public about the natural, cultural and appropriate recreational features in the Fells. Additionally, we promote awareness, policies and programs which honor and preserve the landscape and heritage of this public resource for current and future generations. Features of the park include Fells Reservoir and Spot Pond (used as back-up reservoirs for the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority), two observation towers featuring scenic views of Boston and the surrounding area, and many vernal pools. In the summer months, sailing lessons and boat rentals are offered on Spot Pond. Today the park surrounds two currently inactive reservoirs, Spot Pond and the Fells Reservoir, and the three (North, Middle, and South) active reservoirs supplying the town of Wi******er. Spot Pond and the Fells Reservoir are part of the Wachusett water system, one of six primary water systems that feed metropolitan Boston's waterworks. Trailheads are accessible from Interstate 93 at exits 33 and 34.

Today, the House of Representatives is taking up the Mass Ready Act, and Amendment #10 would phase out the use of anticoagulant rodenticides statewide.

Across Massachusetts, thousands of beloved pets and wildlife including owls, hawks, and foxes are being poisoned by these toxic rodenticides. And many die after suffering prolonged, painful deaths from ingesting rodenticides through contaminated prey.

Contact your representatives today and urge them to support this amendment. We need them to hear from as many supporters as possible before they vote on June 17.

TAKE ACTION: https://bit.ly/UrgentActionToday

This Wednesday, April 15, the State Senate will vote on whether to adopt a proposal to phase out the use of anticoagulant rodenticides that are poisoning thousands of wildlife and pets in Massachusetts every year.

An amendment to the Mass Ready Act is pending, and if it’s adopted, it will help ensure that our state phases out the use of anticoagulant rodenticides.

Please contact your legislators today! We need them to hear from as many supporters as possible before they vote this Wednesday. Let’s get this amendment passed to protect our wildlife and pets!

πŸ“£ Action Alert πŸ“£ Please join Friends of the Fells in signing The Great Malden Outdoors' petition to create safer streets surrounding the Fells. Currently, Fells visitors must cross busy roads without crosswalks to reach trail heads. Adding in crosswalks, hiker crossing signs, and crossing signals at Gates #55 and #56 is an imperative step to improving hiker safety in the Fells!

Sign Petition here: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeTKGSMt9lWwXTV5VEq5u0VT7YxiVIcfcg51r0CC2IuJXjdig/viewform

We respectfully urge our elected representatives to take immediate action and address this safety need.

We, the undersigned, are petitioning our state and local representatives to prioritize the installation of a signalized pedestrian crossing at the intersection of Fellsway and East Border, and East Border at Woodlawn Rd, and a DCR Map Kiosk at DCR Gate #55 for overall improved safety and wayfinding....
