This is an offering of a "School Forest Project" underway that is being facilitated by a couple of "history friends" that have served as members of the Bd of Directors for the Forest History Association of Wisconsin that connect with the Camp 3 School Forest in Sugar Camp Wisconsin. The 40-acre "Camp 3 School Forest" is a recent acquisition of the Three Lakes School District, situated midway between the Sugar Camp Elementary School and the Three Lakes Elementary/High School Facilities. The School District has had land entered into the School Forest Program since 1938, but only recently committed to engaging their community and faculty within this program dedicated to advance sustainable forest practice.
While a series of potential Learning Objects have been Identified, two are currently in play --the property features a classic Vernal Pond, on which students have joined the Amphibian Survey/Study being conducted across Northern Wisconsin by WDNR's Endangered Resources Program --as well as engaging the Lac Du Flambeau Ojibwe on the presence of a curious "mystery tree" that bears keen resemblance to a Native Trail Marker Tree. For this post, I'll offer a quick review of the mechanics of study/data collection principles in play on this 'collaborative' community educational process. - John Grosman

Call for Presentations

The Forest History Association of Wisconsin is pleased to issue this Call for Presentations for the 2025 Wisconsin Forest History Talks lecture series.

If you have a special interest or area of expertise related to Wisconsin forest activities, we encourage you to consider sharing that information with fellow FHAW members and others as a webinar presenter. Your talk can remind citizens of the importance of forests in Wisconsin’s past and present.

Proposals can be submitted to the webinar committee at the FHAW email, [email protected] or by reaching out to your Webinar Committee members, Tom Jerow and Don Schnitzler. Not interested in submitting a proposal but have some ideas for programming, webinars, or speakers — submit them to the same address, or leave a comment below — we’d love to hear them! Tom or Schnitz will provide technical support for the presentation platform as needed.
