We’ll take any excuse to celebrate coffee. 🇺🇬

Uganda is one of Africa’s leading coffee-producing countries and is especially known for Robusta, one of the world’s two main types of coffee. Robusta grows naturally in Uganda and is known for its strong flavor and higher caffeine content.

Why It Matters: Childhood Nutrition

Good nutrition does more than help children grow. It supports healthy development, strengthens the immune system, and helps the body recover from illness.

At Lacor Hospital, every child is screened for malnutrition, regardless of why they come to the hospital. Some children who are malnourished don't appear thin. A lack of protein, for example, can cause swelling, making a child look healthy when they are not.

Children with severe malnutrition receive specialized therapeutic milk or nutrient-rich foods, while caregivers receive practical education on preparing nutritious meals using locally available foods. After leaving the hospital, many children continue to receive follow-up care to support their recovery.

If you've recently joined our community, here's a quick introduction to one of our favorite series.

Acholi is the primary language spoken throughout much of northern Uganda, where our partner, Lacor Hospital, is located. Many of the patients, caregivers, and staff at the hospital speak Acholi every day.

Throughout this series, we're sharing simple Acholi words and phrases to help you learn a little about the language and the people who speak it.

Today's word is... Hospital.

At Lacor Hospital, patients rarely come alone.

On average, each patient is accompanied by two caregivers, usually family members who remain at the hospital for days or even weeks.

They prepare meals, wash clothes, and care for their loved ones throughout their stay.

Medical care is provided by doctors and nurses, but recovery is often supported by family.

At Lacor, caring for patients also means making space for the people who care for them.

Why It Matters: Blood Donations

Every day, hospitals rely on donated blood to save lives. Because blood cannot be manufactured, every transfusion depends on someone choosing to donate.

At Lacor Hospital, approximately 700 units of blood are needed each month, and most of those transfusions are given to children. Many young patients need blood to treat severe anemia caused by illnesses such as malaria or sickle cell disease. Blood is also necessary for mothers experiencing serious bleeding during childbirth, trauma patients, and people undergoing surgery.

A reliable blood supply allows doctors to respond quickly when patients need urgent care. Through its partnership with Uganda's national blood transfusion system, Lacor has access to donated blood, helping ensure it is available when patients need it most.

Why It Matters: Early Diagnosis

Many illnesses are far more treatable when they're found early.
Routine screenings, laboratory tests, prenatal care, diagnostic imaging, and preventive health services help identify health concerns before they become more serious.

At Lacor Hospital, these services are a routine part of patient care. Through laboratory testing, diagnostic imaging, prenatal screenings, and preventive care programs, the hospital helps patients receive timely diagnoses and begin treatment sooner.

Early diagnosis doesn't just improve treatment. It can save lives.
