Orangutan Outreach works with partners in Borneo and Sumatra to protect orangutans in their native habitat while providing care for orphaned and displaced orangutans until they can be safely returned to the forest. We seek to raise funds and promote public awareness of orangutan conservation issues by collaborating with partner organizations around the world.

BORNEO IS BURNING! 🔥🔥🔥News from BOSF:

One of the largest stores of carbon in the world, the Mawas Conservation Area, is at risk of burning. With an underground peatdome reaching 60’ feet in depth, its potential to release toxic haze is catastrophic in size. The BOS Foundation is working to keep it from burning, protecting the orangutans and the stored carbon, however, already 49.5 ha of land has already been affected by the fires.

BORNEO IS BURNING! 🔥🔥🔥 News from BNF:

It was early August when fires started to burn around Sebangau National Park. This forest is home to thousands of orangutans and countless other species, now all under threat. Today the park is SURROUNDED by fire outbreaks. Along the northeastern border, 30 km of fire is closing in. Fires are also creeping in from Batu Ampar, Bangah, Kalampangan, and Marang regions. Borneo Nature Indonesia and community firefighting teams are working tirelessly as the government drops water from above, but it hasn’t been enough.

BORNEO IS BURNING! 🔥🔥🔥 News from CAN:

In East Kalimantan, fires are spreading quickly, leaving the Conservation Action Network (CAN) team stretched thin as they work to fight flames across an estimated 1,500 ha. One fire has come within 100 m of their wildlife rehabilitation center, which is home to orangutans and many other species. Another fire is approaching the Karaitan Protection Forest, a key habitat for orangutans in the area.

This is terribly distressing.

🔥The fires in Borneo continue to burn. Just as dangerous as the flames, the air has become hazardous to breathe as smoke covers the entire island. Air quality indexes show that much of the air in Central and West Kalimantan is hazardous to breathe, with a reading of over 300 nearly everywhere. Hazardous range is 301–500.

😷 In Palangkaraya, where the BOSF Nyaru Menteng Orangutan Rehabilitation Center is, some air quality stations have registered measures over 1,000. That is literally way off the charts.

This situation is extremely serious. The people and wildlife of Indonesia desperately need help. To learn more and support firefighting efforts, please visit our Emergency Fire Fund webpage. (link in the comments)

Another Sumatran Orangutan Born in the Wild! 🎉

Sumatran Orangutan Conservation Programme (SOCP) has confirmed another wild birth from a rehabilitated Sumatran orangutan in the Jantho Nature Reserve in Aceh.

Wenda was rescued in 2009, underwent rehabilitation at the SOCP Quarantine Center, transferred to the Jantho Orangutan Reintroduction Centre in 2013, and was released into the wild in 2014. And now she’s given birth to a little bundle of hope and joy!

Today is ! It’s time to 🎉celebrate🎊 the special red apes! 🦧

It is also an opportunity to spread the word about their struggles and threats. It’s a day to educate people on the importance of orangutans to the health of the rainforests and our planet, and to motivate others to help protect these critically endangered great apes.‼️

The fire season in Indonesia has begun and 2026 is predicted to be one of the worst fire years on record due to a “super” El Niño. Orangutan Outreach is in daily contact with our Indonesian partners and we are kept updated on their needs.

Our partners at YIARI have fought to keep fires away from their orangutan center in West Kalimantan. Our partners at Borneo Nature Foundation and BOS Foundation are tackling fires in Central Kalimantan.

We have a long fire season ahead of us. If you haven’t donated yet, please consider supporting the Orangutan Outreach Emergency Fire Fund.

You can learn more and stay updated on the fires affecting our partners on our Fire Fund webpage at redapes.org/fire-fund/
