is saddened to announce the passing of K-9 Sonny (retired). Sonny served as a MPD K-9 from 2017–2020 and was partnered with Tommy Mcauliffe.

These are Tommy's words -

"There is no limit to the love, loyalty and courage that Sonny has shared with me and my family. We have worked lived and played together for almost 10 years. Not only has he been my partner but also my best friend. My brother. He has been my shadow and a loving member of my family since we won each other’s trust many years ago.

We’ve chased down bad guys and snuggled with my kids together in the same 24 hour day.

This pup has always given everything to everyone who has ever asked him to do anything. He’s worked sick, tired, hungry, scared.

Best cop I ever worked with. Best friend I’ve ever had."

The team had a tremendous work ethic, never refusing a chance to get involved in the action - they were proven on the street. Like all our teams, they went into harm’s way often. The team were members of Region 4 of the United States Police Canine Association and were nationally certified in Patrol and Drug detection.

After his retirement, Sonny lived with Tommy and his family and enjoyed the attention and relaxation he deserved. Sonny enjoyed his hikes and learning how to herd the family chickens. Our condolences go out to the Mcauliffe family.

Rest easy good boy, you will be missed.

Today marks K-9 Grimm’s final day of service with the Manchester Police Department K-9 Unit.

Officer Alex Martens and K-9 Grimm were partnered in March 2018 and have proudly served as a dual-purpose K-9 team. Grimm is a patrol dog cross-trained in narcotics detection and served as a SWAT K-9. Throughout their career, the team has demonstrated exceptional proficiency—consistently locating and apprehending violent offenders, seizing dangerous contraband, and assisting in the discovery of critical evidence. Officer Martens and K-9 Grimm have never hesitated to place themselves in harm’s way to protect fellow officers and the citizens of Manchester. Few K-9 teams reach the level of success they achieved together.

K-9 Grimm is known for his friendly, even-keeled temperament and energetic personality—paired with the remarkable ability to become focused and fierce when confronting violent offenders. Together, Officer Martens and Grimm have been true ambassadors to the community, participating in charity events, demonstrations, and supporting Swim With a Mission to help raise awareness and assistance for veteran service organizations.

The team has earned numerous certifications and awards through the United States Police Canine Association and has proudly represented the department at national field trials.

We often ask ourselves whether our service has made a difference, but for this team, the difference they’ve made is undeniable. Thank you both for your service and sacrifice.

K-9 Grimm will retire from full duty and remain with Officer Martens and his family. Upon retirement, his medical and care expenses will be supported by the Manchester Association of Police K-9s.

Please join us in congratulating Officer Martens and K-9 Grimm on a job exceptionally well done.

19 years - Never Forgotten - Rest easy Briggsy.

Officer Michael L. Briggs was born on May 2, 1971 in Manchester, New Hampshire. Upon graduating from Pembroke Academy he served four years in the United States Marine Corps. Briggs worked as a Correctional Officer with the Hillsborough County Department of Correction from 1995 until 2001. From 1995 until 1998 Briggs also worked as a part-time Police Officer for the Epsom Police Department. He was hired by Manchester Police Department in 2001.

In the early morning of October 16, 2006, Officer Briggs was shot while attempting to speak with two individuals regarding reports of gunfire during a domestic disturbance on Lake Avenue. Officer Briggs, died on October 17, 2006 - he was 35 years old.

The suspect fled the state but was arrested later in the day while hiding in his grandmother's home in Dorchester, Massachusetts. In an odd twist, it was discovered that the suspect was the same man whose life Officer Briggs had saved in 2003 following a shooting.

Officer Briggs was survived by his wife, Laura, their two sons Brian and Mitchell, his parents, and three sisters.

It is with a heavy heart we share the passing of K-9 Doug (retired).

K-9 Doug served as a Manchester Police K-9 from 2016-2023. He was a dual-purpose K-9 - cross trained in Patrol/SWAT and explosives/ballistics detection.  Officer Jake Tyler and K-9 Doug were not only a proven team on the streets but also an agency and crowd favorite.  As a K-9 team they have obtained numerous certifications throughout their career including the United States Police Canine Association, The Bureau of Alcohol To***co and Fi****ms, North American Police Working Dog Association, Boston Police K-9 Academy and others.

K-9 Doug was well known for his aquatic abilities (and sometimes mistaken for a shark). Ofc Tyler and Doug participated in annual Swim With A Mission events raising funds and promoting awareness for Veteran Service Oganizations.

We honor K-9 Doug's service to the citizens of Manchester. He was a loyal and faithful partner, a beloved family member and he will be missed by all. Please keep the Tyler family in your thoughts and prayers. Rest Easy Good Boy. K-9 Doug - EOW 10/12/2025.

is saddened to announce the passing of K-9 Lord. We remember and honor his selfless service to the City and citizens of Manchester from 2014-2017. Lord served as a Manchester Police dual purpose K-9 and had a reputation for his fierce work ethic and no-nonsense approach to his duties on the street. Lord had an alter ego at home with a playful and caring demeanor with his family and friends. Lord served the City with honor, tenacity and dedicated service. He was a loyal and faithful partner and a loved family member. Upon Lord's retirement, the Manchester Association of Police K-9's had the honor of providing him benefits so he could enjoy many years of a happy and healthly life. Speaking from experience, Lord is fondly remembered for one of our hardest gripping teams (for those that were brave enough to put on the suit!). We honor Lord's service and extend our condolences to LT Cataldo and his family. Rest easy good boy! K-9 Lord ~ EOW May 21, 2025.
