Founded in 1980 and incorporated as a non-profit in 1992, Bread of Life brings together over 500 volunteers from our 37 partner organizations and the community at large to offer free food to hungry, homeless, and isolated people. Services include evening meals held four nights a week in Malden; food pantries serving residents of Malden, Everett, Medford, Melrose, Saugus, Stoneham, Reading, N. Rea

ding, Wakefield and Winchester; grocery delivery to senior citizens in public housing in Malden, Everett, Melrose, Medford and Wakefield; and food delivery to homeless families sheltered in local motels. BOL provides over 1,030,000 meals a year for local families who are low-income, unemployed, homeless or living on retirement or disability fixed incomes. BOL is consistently one of the top purchasers and distributors of food in the Greater Boston Food Bank network of agencies and is classed in the highest tier: Strategic Partner.

Reflections from our Director

St. John Chrysostom, an early Father of the Church and a champion of the poor, taught that “Feeding the hungry is a greater work than raising the dead.” How amazing to think that every one of us can participate in an act that has deeper significance than even a miracle like bringing someone back to life!

In 2026, approximately 673 million people worldwide—about 8.2% of the global population—are living with chronic hunger according to the World Food Program of the United Nations. Furthermore, nearly 3 billion people cannot afford a healthy, nutritious diet, and over 300 million face acute food insecurity. This is actually progress over 50 years ago when it is estimated that roughly 1 billion people worldwide suffered from chronic hunger and undernourishment, approximately 25% to 30% of the global population at that time. And the world has made gains in the last few years after hunger rates went up in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. We can rightly celebrate the progress the world has made in decreasing hunger. But clearly, our work is far from done.

Feeding people who can't afford food is not just an act of charity; it is a reflection of our shared humanity. Each meal served is a step closer to a compassionate and harmonious world. Thank you for keeping your heart softened toward those in need, for not giving up in the face of the challenge. I know each of us can only do our small part, but I trust in God's power to multiply and guide our efforts toward a more just and loving world. And that starts with me, and you, right here in our neighborhoods, towns and cities. Thank you for all you do and give of yourself to continue this great work.

We’re Hiring!

Temporary Meals Program Assistant (6-3-26)

Job Overview:
As staff of a Malden-based nonprofit food security organization, this individual will work as a temporary, part-time employee in the Meals Program that provides a congregate meal in Malden four nights per week.

Hours: 18 hours/week
Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 1:30pm – 6:00pm

Duties:
Help select food, assist with meal preparation, volunteer supervision, serving and clean-up for evening meal.

Competencies:
1) Ability to lift 25 to 35 pound boxes
2) Skills in menu planning, cooking, using kitchen equipment.
3) Ability to work well with volunteers, be respectful and courteous, and present BOL in a positive light to them and our guests.
4) Be a team player
5) Good cleaning and organizing skills
6) Drivers license preferred but not required

Pay: TBD

Did you know Bread of Life’s Everett Mobile Market provides nutritious food for over 100 families each and every week? We drive our truck to the Lafayette School and rely on volunteers like you to help give food out. Through this program we extend our reach to those in need beyond our Malden location.

Are you interested in volunteering? You can come help pack groceries any Wednesday starting at 9:30am by dropping in at 54 Eastern Ave., Malden. You can also help distribute food Thursdays any time 3:30-5pm at the Lafayette School at 113 Edith St., Everett. Cantonese, Portuguese, Haitian Creole, Spanish speakers welcome! Our first time hosting a Malden PorchFest event was great! Our dining/multipurpose hall is a a wonderful open space (out of the rain!) and we heard excellent performers: poet Denise Vielehr, music theatre singer Miguel Matias, jazz group Toby, and rock/ country/ blues singer/guitarist Kent Vienot. Looking forward to next year!
