Re: Hamas Has Killed(2) Israeli Soldiers and Wounded (2) Others in Northern Gaza in a Gunfight

Issued by Sanborn Analytics

Date: January 6th, 2024

Contact: [email protected] | (+1) 617-539-6114

Sanborn Analytics issues this maritime security bulletin to advise the maritime shipping community and the armed naval forces at sea of recent developments and associated risks in the Eastern Mediterranean region.

Earlier today, on January 6th, 2024, two Israeli (IDF) soldiers were killed and two others were seriously wounded during fighting in the northern Gaza Strip, as reported by the Israeli military. The soldiers were killed in a gunfight with Hamas fighters.

One of the fallen soldiers has been identified as Captain Eitan Israel Shiknazi, 24, a deputy company commander in the Nahal Brigade’s 932nd Battalion, from Eli. The name of the second fallen soldier will be released following family notification. The IDF has confirmed that the incident occurred during combat operations in Beit Hanoun, northern Gaza.

The ongoing Israeli incursion into Gaza has faced significant challenges. Sanborn Analytics reiterates its earlier assessment that the operation has become increasingly ineffective, with Hamas now appearing to hold the strategic upper hand.

Advisory:

Sanborn Analytics advises all maritime traffic in the Eastern Mediterranean to proceed with heightened caution, as the regional instability has potential spillover effects on maritime operations. Vessel operators are urged to review their security protocols, remain vigilant, and stay informed of updates from official sources.

This is a continuing maritime security or marsec update from Sanborn Analytics. On January 4th, 2024, Taiwan's Coast Guard rescued four injured crew members from the bulker Panoria, which caught fire off Kaohsiung. One crewman suffered serious burns, while three others sustained minor injuries.

The fire broke out in the engine room around 1700 hours near Pintung County. The crew extinguished it, but the captain requested evacuation for all 21 aboard. Due to 12-foot waves, ship-to-ship transfers were impossible, so a Ministry of National Defense helicopter evacuated the injured to a Kaohsiung hospital.

The remaining 17 crew members stayed on board. The tug Salvage Rigger was dispatched to tow the vessel, which was moving northwest off Taiwan’s coast by Sunday. All reporting credit goes to Maritime-Executive(see link)

This is a continuing maritime security or marsec update from Sanborn Analytics. On December 26th, 2024, the Philippine Coast Guard received a report regarding a missing seafarer from a Singapore-registered bulk carrier managed by Anglo-Eastern on behalf of Rio Tinto. The vessel had departed China on December 18th and was en route to Dampier, Australia, with arrival expected later this week.

According to the ship's master, the missing crew member, a deck fitter identified as Gel Aguavia, was last seen on December 26 on the vessel's port side. He was reportedly wearing a dark blue reflective suit at the time of his disappearance.

The Philippine Coast Guard dispatched the BRP Capones to conduct a search-and-rescue (SAR) operation and issued a general broadcast alert. Two nearby bulk carriers, HL Hope and Federal Sutton, also participated in the search efforts. All reporting credit goes to Maritime-Executive (see link)

This is a continuing maritime security or marsec update from Sanborn Analytics. On January 1st, 2025, the Vietnamese Navy successfully rescued the product tanker Petrolimex 11, which was adrift and uncontrollable off the coast of central Vietnam. Despite challenging sea conditions, the navy towed the vessel to a safe anchorage.

The Vietnamese-flagged tanker, en route from Malaysia to Vietnam with a likely cargo of gasoline, issued a distress call after suffering a critical engine failure. At the time, the vessel was approximately 20 nautical miles southeast of Cam Ranh Bay, with 25 crew members aboard. The Navy promptly dispatched a rescue vessel, navigating seas with waves reaching 20 feet or higher. The naval team secured a tow line overnight and ensured the tanker’s safe arrival at anchorage.

The Petrolimex 11, a 40,000 dwt tanker built in 2008, measures 577 feet (176 meters) in length and is operated by the Vietnam Tanker Joint Stock Corporation (VITCO). All reporting credit goes to Maritime-Executive (see link)

Sanborn Analytics issues this maritime security bulletin to advise the maritime shipping community and the armed naval forces at sea regarding recent developments in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden region.

Incident Summary:

On December 31st, 2024, U.S. and British warplanes conducted multiple airstrikes on Sana’a, Yemen, reportedly in response to Yemeni operations against Israel.

According to Lebanon’s al-Mayadeen television network:

Three airstrikes targeted the September 21st Park in northwestern Sana’a, a site previously associated with the First Armored Division.

Additional airstrikes hit the al-Ardi complex in al-Safiyah District and the 22nd Military Industrial Complex in al-Thawra District, with a total of eight strikes reported.

Sanborn Analytics confirms that Yemeni Houthi forces retaliated by launching drones and missiles targeting the U.S. naval vessel USS Harry S. Truman. However, neither side achieved a successful strike in their retaliatory efforts.

Advisory:

Sanborn Analytics advises all maritime vessels operating in the vicinity of the Red Sea, Bab el-Mandeb Strait, and the Gulf of Aden to:

Exercise heightened caution and maintain awareness of the evolving security situation.

Stay informed of navigational warnings issued by relevant authorities.

Implement robust security measures and avoid approaching conflict zones.

Further updates will be provided as the situation develops.

This is a continuing maritime security or marsec update from Sanborn Analytics. On December 30th, 2024, the Philippine Coast Guard launched a search and rescue operation after a domestic cargo ship, the Jerlyn Khatness, capsized in rough seas near Samar Island in the central Philippines. The 600 dwt vessel, built in 1993 and operating in the Philippines since 2016, was carrying cement from Cebu to Northern Samar when it encountered large waves and sank around 1430 hours.

Of the 15 crewmembers aboard, 13 were rescued, including one who swam ashore after 25 hours in the water. The body of a 30-year-old male was recovered, while a 64-year-old male remains missing. Passing vessels played a key role in the rescue efforts, with Civil Defense Philippines leading an aerial search for the missing individual.

The Coast Guard has located the sunken vessel and is urging passing ships to assist in the search while exercising caution. They have also called for enhanced safety measures in response to the region’s hazardous and changing weather conditions.

MARITIME SECURITY BULLETIN AND ADVISORY

Re: The U.S. Navy Launched Aerial Attacks Against the Yemen Houthis

(Attacks Deemed Ineffective)

Contact: [email protected] | Phone: (+1) (617) 539-6114

Date: December 31st, 2024

Sanborn Analytics issues this maritime security bulletin to advise the maritime shipping community and the armed naval forces at sea of military action in the Gulf of Aden and surrounding waters.

Summary of Events

On December 30th and 31st, 2024, the U.S. military conducted strikes targeting Houthi-controlled sites in Yemen's capital, Sanaa, and coastal regions. These operations were directed against a Houthi command and control facility and advanced conventional weapons (ACW) production and storage facilities, including missiles and uncrewed aerial vehicles (UAVs).

According to U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM), the strikes aimed to degrade Houthi military capabilities. However, the spokesperson for Yemen’s Houthi rebels, Mohammed Abdulsalam, asserted their intent to continue defending their territory following the air raids.

Houthi-run Al Masirah TV reported that a total of 12 air raids were conducted by U.S. military jets across two districts in Sanaa. Despite the targeted strikes, Sanborn Analytics' surveillance—using drone and HUMINT sources—has concluded that the Houthis retain their full military capabilities, with no significant degradation observed in their operational readiness or strategic assets.

Geopolitical Impact and Advisory

The situation underscores the ongoing instability in Yemen, posing potential risks to maritime security in the Bab-el-Mandeb Strait and adjacent areas. The conflict's spillover effect may increase the likelihood of attacks or disruptions targeting commercial shipping and naval operations in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden.

Maritime stakeholders and naval forces are advised to:

Exercise heightened vigilance when transiting near Yemeni waters and the Bab-el-Mandeb Strait.

Review and update contingency plans for potential threats such as uncrewed surface and aerial attacks or mines.

Monitor regional developments through reliable intelligence sources and advisories.

Enhance communication protocols to ensure rapid response and coordination during incidents.
