We are saddened to share the passing of Dr. Ron McCoy, a visionary leader in the IPPNW family.

Dr. Ron McCoy will be remembered for his kindness and commitment to peace. On top of his long career as an obstetrician, Dr. McCoy founded the Malaysian Physicians for Social Responsibility in 1987, served as co-president of IPPNW for 8 years, and proposed the establishment of International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN) in 2005.

His dedication as a humanitarian to creating a safer world free from nuclear weapons has touched us all.

We will not stop until we see the complete and irreversible elimination of nuclear weapons 🩺🕊️

Nobel Peace Prize laureates have worked to highlight the catastrophic humanitarian consequences of nuclear weapons and to strengthen international efforts to ban testing. Every nuclear test is a reminder of what is at stake: human lives, our environment, and the future of generations to come.

Today, 29 August, is International Day Against Nuclear Testing. This date was chosen by the UN to commemorate the closure of the Semipalatinsk nuclear test site in Kazakhstan in 1991.

For over four decades, this site witnessed hundreds of nuclear explosions, leaving lasting scars on the land. Its closure became a symbol of hope and a turning point in global efforts toward a world without nuclear weapons.

This day is a reminder of the progress made, and of the work that remains to ensure that nuclear tests become a relic of the past.

IPPNW stands in solidarity with our colleagues in Nepal following this week's devastating flood. We recognize that the unchecked climate crisis will make extreme weather events more frequent, leading to preventable deaths, forced displacement, spread of infectious diseases, and more. As a threat multiplier, it erodes the social determinants of health and deepens the root causes of conflict and instability. We can prevent future catastrophe with the urgent, global shift from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources.

The consequences of a nuclear explosion, by accident or on purpose, are dire. But we don't have to accept them.

We work every day toward the total elimination of nuclear weapons through the UN Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons. 100 countries have already agreed through this treaty that nuclear weapons do not keep us safe, and there is a path to get rid of them. Later this year we'll attend the first Review Conference of the Nuclear Ban Treaty and work with all of these states on the path towards total elimination of nuclear weapons.

This World Humanitarian Day, IPPNW reaffirms our calls for the protection of health care and humanitarian aid workers who risk their lives to deliver lifesaving care in conflict zones. Violence against them is unacceptable and those responsible must be held accountable.
