Today, August 19, we gather in Chicago with heavy hearts to commemorate our freedom fighter, Pawo Lobga Rangzen, on the 49th day since he made the ultimate sacrifice for the cause of Tibet, self-immolating in front of the United Nations.

In Tibetan Buddhist tradition, the 49th day marks an important moment in the journey of consciousness through the Bardo—the intermediate state between death and rebirth. On this sacred day, we pray that his consciousness finds peace and a fortunate rebirth, while we honor the profound courage and compassion behind his sacrifice.

Today, Tibetans from Wisconsin, Minnesota, Chicago, Ohio, and Indiana have come together in solidarity—not only to remember Pawo Lobga Rangzen, but also to raise our voices against the continued injustice and oppression faced by Tibetans under Chinese rule.

His life ended, but his courage must not be forgotten. His sacrifice reminds us of the price that some are willing to pay for freedom, justice, dignity, and the hope of a better future for Tibet.

May his sacrifice never fade from our hearts.
May his consciousness find peace and liberation.
May the aspirations of the Tibetan people for freedom and justice one day become reality.

For Tibet. For justice. For freedom. 🕯️🙏
