There is still time to let your US Senators know how you feel about the proposed 2027 National Defense Authorization Act (Military Budget) because it has not yet passed the Senate. The proposed 2027 Military Budget is $1.15 Trillion, a 28% increase over 2026. This increase is significantly greater than any annual increase for decades. According the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute, the proposed 2027 US military budget is equal to the next six highest national military budgets combined. (See chart below.). These increases are taking place at a time when spending on education, health care, food assistance, and enviromental threats are being drastically reduced.
In his 1967 speech Beyond Vietnam, Rev. Martin Luther King said “A nation that continues year after year to spend more money on military defense than on programs of social uplift is approaching spiritual death.” Remembering these words, if you are concerned about the priorities and values the 2027 US proposed Military Budget reveals, PWG urges you, as a person of faith or conscience and a US citizen, to communicate your concern to your US Senators.
