Before the mills, there was the river.

Long before Lowell became known for its mills and the Industrial Revolution, Indigenous communities had already lived, traveled, fished, and built their lives along the Merrimack and Concord Rivers for centuries.

The Merrimack was central to life here, and its name is believed to come from an Indigenous word meaning “The Strong Place.”

The history of Lowell did not begin with the mills.

This Indigenous Peoples Day, we’re taking a moment to recognize the Indigenous peoples and communities whose histories are deeply connected to this land—and to remember that the stories of this place began long before the city we know today.
