The Open Pantry of Greater Lowell Awarded $25,000Cummings Grant
The nonprofit receives 3 years of funding from Cummings Foundation
Lowell, MA 2026 – The Open Pantry has been selected as one of 150 nonprofits to receive funding through Cummings Foundation’s annual grant program, which awarded $35 million this year. Chosen through a competitive review process that drew a record 959 applicants, the Lowell-based organization will receive $25,000over three years.

The grant will enable us to continue to provide for clients with critical food needs and without transportation, making us essential. We give high-quality groceries each week. We do this with two part-time paid employees and 50 rotating volunteers.

This year, the Woburn-based Cummings Foundation increased its annual grant program from $30 million to $35 million and shifted to fully unrestricted funding, allowing recipients to direct grant dollars where they are needed most.

Foundation executive director and trustee Joyce Vyriotes noted that the changes reflect growing concerns among Greater Boston nonprofits about rising costs, increased demand for services, and sustained uncertainty around public funding.

“Nonprofit professionals are closest to the challenges facing their communities, making them best positioned to determine where and how new funds will drive the greatest impact,” said Vyriotes. “By providing increased, flexible funding, we hope to strengthen organizations’ long-term stability and help them respond to evolving community needs.”

This year’s grant recipients represent a wide range of causes, including housing and food insecurity, education, workforce development, healthcare, mental health services, social justice, immigrant support, and youth programming.

The annual grant program supports Massachusetts nonprofits that are based in and primarily serve Middlesex, Essex, and Suffolk counties, as well as Brookline, Dedham, Milton, Needham, Quincy, and Wellesley.

Through this place-based initiative, Cummings Foundation reinvests in the areas where it owns commercial real estate. Its buildings are all managed at no cost to the Foundation by its affiliate, Cummings Properties, a Woburn-based commercial developer that leases and manages 11 million square feet of debt-free space. All rental profits support the Foundation.

Since its founding, Cummings Foundation has awarded more than $650 million to Greater Boston nonprofits. The complete list of this year’s grant recipients, along with additional information about the Foundation and its grant programs, is available at CummingsFoundation.org.

Open Pantry closes — temporarily
IN SHOCKING news for the food-insecure community, Open Pantry announced Friday that they have been asked to vacate the premises that they have occupied for more than two decades. “OnApril 1, 2026, the Open Pantry of Greater Lowell received notice that it had 30 days to vacate 13 Hurd Street.” Board Chair Rebecca Wisniewski said by email on Friday. “EffectiveApril 30, our doors at that address will close.” The Sun profiled the local food pantry last summer, when federal cuts to food programs and inflation were leading to an increase in food insecurity in at-risk communities in the city. Founded in 1981, the Open Pantry of Greater Lowell is the oldest pantry in the city. On average, over 50% of Open Pantry’s clients live below 200% of the poverty line. Children make up 30% of their clients. Seniors are 10% of the caseload, and a good portion come from the Lowell HousingAuthority a few blocks away at South Common Village on Gorham Street.About 50% of its clients walk to the pantry, usually pulling two-wheeled carts. The pantry distributes more than 6,000 pounds of food weekly, and it reaches more than 18,000 people each year. In March 2025, the Trump administration cut $2.5 million from the Greater Boston Food Bank, causing immense hardship to the pantries and clients that rely on them. The Open Pantry food distribution went from 6,000 pounds of food each week to between 3,000 and 4,000 pounds at double the cost. And in July, the food for Open Pantry’s Brown Bag program, which fed LHA’s senior residents, was abruptly eliminated. The nonprofit soldiered on, but this latest challenge is a little hard to stomach. “As a business, we do not have the protections people have,” Wisniewski said. Beginning May 1, while its new permanent home is being prepared, the Open Pantry will continue food distribution directly from its delivery truck, in partnership with the Greater Boston Food Bank and the city of Lowell. That partnership is what will get the nonprofit through this most recent obstacle, said board member Erin Gendron. “It’s been a busy last 24 days, that’s for sure, but the pantry will weather this challenge,” she said by text Friday. “The community and the city have really stepped up to help. The Department of Planning and Development as well as other nonprofits, have been very helpful in navigating next steps during this time.”
Until the ink is dry on the new space, the board is mum on its next location, but Wisniewski said, “Our address is changing; our mission is still the same.” “We always believed we were serving Lowell,” Wisniewski said. “What this moment has shown us is that Lowell was always holding us too. We just did not know how many people had our back until we needed them to.” With rising food costs and limited supply from the Greater Boston Food Bank, the need for support is greater than ever. The pantry relies on tax-deductible donations to help ensure that no one in the community goes hungry. To donate to Open Pantry, visit theopenpantry.org.

🏠 We got 30 days notice to leave a home we've had for over 20 years.

We won't lie. It stopped us in our tracks.

But then something happened.

Lowell showed up.

Phone calls. Offers. Partners stepping in before we even finished asking. People we haven't heard from in years reaching out to say, “we've got you”.

Forty-three years ago, we started feeding this community. Turns out, it was feeding us all along. We just didn't know how many people had our back until we needed them to.

Here's what you need to know:

🚛 We are not stopping. Starting May 1, we are distributing food directly from our truck in partnership with the Greater Boston Food Bank and the City of Lowell. Family food boxes. Same care. Different location.

📍 Stay connected. Distribution times and locations will be posted here in real time. If you or someone you know depends on us, follow this page and share this post.

❤️ We need you. A donation right now — any amount — keeps food moving and helps us prepare our new permanent home, which is coming soon.

The unexpected doesn't break a community.

It reveals one.
