Safe Place works because communities show up for youth.

Across the country, partners help create a safety net—businesses, public locations, and community spaces displaying the Safe Place sign so young people can find help fast.

To every partner and supporter helping youth access safety and support: thank you for supporting the young people in your community.

Mental health matters, especially for young people navigating a crisis. In 2025, mental health issues were the third leading reason a young person sought immediate help and safety through Safe Place.

If you’re a young person in need of support right now, you can text SAFE to 4HELP (44357) and reply 2Chat to connect with a licensed mental health professional. You can also seek out the nearest Safe Place site in your community. Just look for the yellow and black sign.

May is Mental Health Awareness month. No matter what you’re facing—stress at home, conflict with family, bullying, or feeling unsafe—you don’t have to handle it alone.

Safe Place ® is here so youth in crisis can find immediate safety and support. There are two ways youth can access help:
- Look for the black and yellow Safe Place sign in your community, walk in and state you need a Safe Place
- Or use TXT 4 HELP anytime to connect with help. Simply text “SAFE” to 4HELP (44357).

For youth. Someplace to go…someone to help.

Human trafficking is a global issue, affecting nearly 50 million victims across the world. It’s also a local issue, as kids and adults alike are exploited in communities right here. Throughout the month of May, National Safe Place Network is partnering with TAT Nonprofit to share age-appropriate resources about this issue for youth and caregivers. It might be scary or sad to think about, but the good news is that we can all play a role in combating this issue. Visit www.tatnonprofit.org/youth to learn more.

Today, we were able to participate in honoring Matt Reed. Matt has given 26 years of dedicated service to YMCA Safe Place Services in Louisville, KY - the organization where the Safe Place program began. As he steps away from his role as Executive Director, we’re deeply grateful for his leadership, compassion, and lasting impact on young people and the community as a whole.

While this chapter closes, Matt will continue doing meaningful work and making an impact in the world. Thank you, Matt!
