UP for Women and Children

UP for Women and Children Our model is simple, partner with anyone who can help to address the issue of homelessness.

In 2016, we identified a community need for women: a safe space for homeless women and children to go during the day to access showers, laundry, case managers and social services. Founders Andrea and Amy, began a needs assessment by meeting with over 16 service providers and nearly 40 homeless women who were living on the streets and sleeping in the shelters. They were met with overwhelming support and so in 2017 Uniting Partners for Women and Children was founded.

It’s often the small things that make the biggest difference.

"The UP Center has supported us in more ways than we ever imagined. They helped us secure a home and covered our rent and bills each month until we became financially stable. Without their support, we wouldn’t have come this far, at least not this quickly.

The process was also very smooth. We first stayed at the Women and Families shelter, where we were referred and approved for an RRH voucher. Soon after, UP and my case manager were able to get us into housing within just a few days.

UP also provided us with new furniture, including brand-new beds, with support from Happy Homes. Our case manager continues to check in regularly and conducts monthly home visits.

We are truly grateful for everything UP has done for us, helping us transition from homelessness to having a stable home. Now, I’m able to focus on starting my small business, where I remake and redesign furniture. Here are some pieces I’ve repainted and designed from items provided by Happy Homes."

Stories like Ms. M's are why we show up every day.

We are SO proud of our Shelter Manager, Ryan.

Ryan was honored with the Outstanding Homeless Services Award at the Louisville Coalition for the Homeless 40th Anniversary and it couldn't have gone to a more deserving person.

Every single day, Ryan shows up with quiet strength, steady leadership, and deep care for the nearly 100 people who walk through our doors. They create a space where staff feel supported and clients feel seen and that ripples into everything we do.

Congratulations, Ryan. This one's well earned. We are so grateful for everything you bring to this team and to the people we serve.

When a woman receives the keys to her own apartment, she deserves to walk into more than four walls.

She deserves dignity.
She deserves support.
She deserves to feel welcomed home.

We are collecting Welcome Baskets for women moving into their own apartments. Needed items include laundry baskets, cleaning supplies, towels, toiletries, paper products, and nonperishable food.

Starting over often means carrying everything you own from one chapter to the next.

We’re collecting gently used luggage, backpacks, and bags to support women as they move through housing transitions, job opportunities, and new beginnings.

If you’re spring cleaning this season, your extra bag could become someone else’s fresh start.

Our volunteers show up in so many meaningful ways. Some staff our coffee station each morning from 9–12, offering warm drinks and food to the women who walk through our doors. Others spend their weeks in our donations and mail room, sorting contributions and keeping our daily operations running smoothly.

A dedicated few help maintain our furniture, stepping in for small repairs that keep our space welcoming and functional. And our sandwich volunteers make a lunchtime run to Feed Louisville each week, delivering meals directly to UP so no one goes hungry. Every role matters. Every hour given is an act of care.

After successfully completing her Fall Internship at UP, Angela joined the team as a Client Support Specialist!
