When trauma forces you through challenges you can’t control, resilience becomes everything.

At 19, Alyn has faced incredible loss, mental health challenges, and the learning curve of adulting. But low moments didn’t define her, and they didn’t stop her. From honoring her late mother’s memory to graduating high school early and referring her brother to our programs, Alyn keeps choosing love and perseverance.

As one of the first cohorts to move into Berkeley Station earlier this year, Alyn spoke about her journey through trauma and finding support through our Youth Resource Team (YRT). Today, she is successfully employed, thriving, and pursuing her goal of entering the nursing field.

To help young adults like Alyn thrive, St. Joseph Center offers Youth Pathways South LA. Designed for young adults ages 18 to 30, Youth Pathways provides free career training, AI literacy, paid work experience, and full wraparound case management to remove barriers, unlock economic mobility, and build lasting independence.

With the help of our dedicated staff like Janeé and Racquel, we are proud to walk alongside Alyn every step of the way as she builds stability and full independence.

Our friends HBO did a Bread & Roses Café takeover today and brought cake! 🎂Shout out to President & CEO Ryan Smith and SJC board member Mike Dennis with Liberty Hill and staff for joining us. We are grateful for all of our volunteers who show up at the Café daily to help nourish and brighten someone’s day. We’ve made 50 years of impact and are still going strong!

Good news! Congrats to our culinary grad Chef Ricardo Ordaz, who just launched his new career at in Santa Monica!

From overcoming heartbreaking family deaths, surviving homelessness near Skid Row and to graduating from St. Joseph Center Bread & Roses Training Kitchen, Chef Ricardo shows what hard work and community support can achieve. He is so proud of his new job, Chef Ricardo is getting a lobster tattoo to show his dedication and resilience. 

Thank you to our Training Kitchen staff, Chef Govind Armstrong and the entire team at The Lobster for welcoming Chef Ricardo and providing incredible mentorship.

Changes to SNAP and CalFresh are already affecting individuals and families across California.

St. Joseph Center has published a new SNAP & CalFresh Snapshot to help individuals, families, and community partners understand recent changes to food assistance programs, who may be affected, and where to find reliable information and support.

The brief explains changes to eligibility, work and activity requirements, exemptions, and how some benefits are calculated. It also offers practical guidance on reviewing notices, updating information, and finding help.

We are incredibly proud of our St. Joseph Center’s Bread & Roses Training Kitchen students who worked on-site preparing culinary masterpieces for the 78th Emmy Awards.
