My eviction began centuries ago with chains
That in time hid themselves as rebar
Stiffening the foundations, freeways
Walls, ceilings and doors which surround me
But offer only to shade the sidewalk
Where my laundry and television now wait
Like fatherless children

Now I measure the darkness, I study each footstep or whisper
"Where are you sleeping tonight, baby?"
My clothes sag and soil; My weight drops quickly
Like your eyes as you rush past me
Like my eyes as I remember rushing past another
Now I'm the one who's cold and alone
Bleeding in the street

How do I root out these chains which still hold fast
Beneath immaculate backyards that push me away?
How do I get off the street with blurred eyes and a pain in my neck?
