The SMLC Board gathers to clean-up the roundabout in the Mary Carter Greenway that contains SMLC commemorative boulders. It is always a pleasure to have the guidance of Skot Latona, South Platte Park Manager, explaining the native plants in the roundabout that thrive only on rainfall. Kudos to Skot and his team for staffing a live turtle exhibit at the Bike to Work Station nearby!

Our community's tree canopy is a vital resource as we continue to manage our lands through drought and climate change. As the summer heats up, SMLC is urging you to pay special attention to meeting the watering needs of your trees. Denver Water's guidance during Stage 1 drought restrictions is that trees may be watered any day using a hand-held hose or low-volume, non-spray irrigation (such as a drip system). Native trees on residential properties reduce air + surface temperatures, reduce evaporation, and help save energy on cooling (more water savings!), while also benefiting wildlife and biodiversity. Please water only as needed within guidelines and consider native plantings to reduce overall outdoor water consumption.

The official results of the 2026 City Nature Challenge are in! 💚

Across the Colorado Front Range, 713 observers documented 1,262 species in just four days! That includes 30 at-risk species, 14 species found nowhere else, and 56% of observations reached Research Grade!

That’s real science, and you made it happen!

Globally, more than 106,000 people across 754 cities and 61 countries took park, making the City Nature Challenge the largest community science event of its kind on the planet!

The other morning an exciting variety of birds were spotted at the shallow Ketring Park lake.  Of particular interest was the Killdeer pair — a bird that has not been seen at Ketring for several years.  Did you know that the Killdeer’s shrill, two-syllable call sounds like “kill deer”?  Let us know what birds you have seen there lately!
