SMLC Board Members received a tour of the ongoing construction at Reynold’s Landing earlier this month. The project included river and upland improvements that will allow greater access to the South Platte River and improve flood control measures! Who else is excited to see the finished park?

Do a little less yard work this autumn and support pollinators and invertebrates by Leaving the Leaves! 🍂 🐝🪳🍂🪵Leaves, brush piles, fallen logs, plant stems, and flower heads might not be growing anymore, but they aren’t trash — they provide wildlife with the shelter they need to survive the winter!

A thin layer of leaves is actually healthy for grass, but the leaves also don’t need to be left exactly where they fall. You can rake them into garden beds, around tree bases, or into other designated areas. Leaves are great for soil quality: they can suppress weeds, retain moisture, and boost nutrition. And perennial plants appreciate the extra insulation through the winter, too!

And while you’re there, remember: everyone deserves that opportunity. Yet 1 in 3 people in the United States—including 28 million children—still don’t have a quality park within a 10-minute walk of home.

The SMLC Board has initiated a review of some of the smaller parks and pocket parks in the community. The Board is interested in examining opportunities to further enhance these smaller spaces so they can better serve the community and provide greater ways for people to enjoy nature and the outdoors close to home. In some cases, the parks are underutilized. These are precious spaces that can provide enjoyment and wonder and SMLC would like to examine ways they can meet greater potential. Additionally, these personal visits provide an understanding of existing conditions for the SMLC Board to provide relevant input as SSPR master plans and maintenance and operations manuals are developed. The Board will continue its assessment through the remainder of the year and report its findings.

The long-awaited, fully-funded Powers Park Renovation construction is temporarily delayed due to unexpected complications regarding the flood plain. As you know, Powers Park’s primary function is to serve as storm water detention for Slaughterhouse Gulch in order to prevent neighborhood flooding. South Suburban Parks and Recreation (SSPR) has been working tirelessly to get this situation resolved. Both the City of Littleton and SSPR remain extremely committed to the buildout of the park renovation. SMLC remains committed to seeing Powers Park become the place the neighbors envisioned where they can play, recreate, and connect with nature. SMLC will continue to keep you updated on future developments.

Congratulations to our Board Member, Kelly Ingebritson, whose work at The Conservation Fund protected 262-acres at a "13er" peak in the Mosquito Range. A 2-hour drive southwest from Denver, the Loveland Ridge property provides hiking and hunting opportunities and protects a critical wildlife and rare plant corridor. The property is now permanently protected as part of the Pike-San Isabel National Forest! Glad to celebrate more conservation in Colorado!

The SMLC Board gathers to clean-up the roundabout in the Mary Carter Greenway that contains SMLC commemorative boulders. It is always a pleasure to have the guidance of Skot Latona, South Platte Park Manager, explaining the native plants in the roundabout that thrive only on rainfall. Kudos to Skot and his team for staffing a live turtle exhibit at the Bike to Work Station nearby!

Our community's tree canopy is a vital resource as we continue to manage our lands through drought and climate change. As the summer heats up, SMLC is urging you to pay special attention to meeting the watering needs of your trees. Denver Water's guidance during Stage 1 drought restrictions is that trees may be watered any day using a hand-held hose or low-volume, non-spray irrigation (such as a drip system). Native trees on residential properties reduce air + surface temperatures, reduce evaporation, and help save energy on cooling (more water savings!), while also benefiting wildlife and biodiversity. Please water only as needed within guidelines and consider native plantings to reduce overall outdoor water consumption.
