NABA-Central Kentucky

NABA-Central Kentucky Welcome to NABA-Central Kentucky! We are a chapter of the North American Butterfly Association. NABA has chapters throughout the United States.

The North American Butterfly Association (NABA) formed in 1992 is, by far, the largest group of people in North America (Canada, United States, and Mexico) interested in butterflies. We are a membership-based 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization working to increase public enjoyment and conservation of butterflies. NABA owns and operates the National Butterfly Center (NBC), a 100-acre conservation

, education and research center in Mission, Texas. NABA has transformed what was an agricultural field, when acquired by NABA in 2002, into the largest botanical garden in the United States focused on using native plants in a garden setting. More than 220 species of wild butterflies have now been seen at the NBC. NABA runs the NABA Butterfly Monitoring Program, including the 4th of July Butterfly Counts, and has amassed the largest database of butterfly occurrences and abundances in the world. These data are increasingly used by scientists to study butterfly population trends and to answer questions about butterfly biology. NABA’s Program for Butterfly Gardening and Habitats promotes the creation of habitats that increase the world’s population of butterflies. A Butterfly Garden Certification is available for Individuals and institutions. The NABA chapters work at the state and/or local level to conserve butterflies and to educate the public about the importance of butterflies.

Exciting news! I am officially a Certified Pollinator Steward through The Pollinator Partnership! 🦋🐝

This certification program included completing a 7-part training series focused on pollinator conservation, habitat creation, and environmental stewardship, along with hands-on outreach and habitat projects.

As part of the certification requirements, I created a pollinator habitat project at Lakeside Golf Course in Lexington, KY (in partnership with U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and Lexington, KY Parks & Recreation) to help support butterflies, bees, and other important pollinators.

Hard work and dedication truly pay off, and I’m honored to join a growing community committed to making a difference for pollinators, people, and the planet!

We are going to have a long stretch of days with high chances of rain & storms in our area. Take advantage of any time where the sun makes an appearance. Some of the best moments I’ve had searching for butterflies happens right after the rain & when the sun emerges. Activity becomes really fun to watch!

In the meantime, here are a few pics from a few solo trips I took last week. Captions on photos!
Enjoy your holiday weekend! 🦋

Kentucky enters the tagging chat!! I think this is only the 2nd time a tagged Monarch has been found in Mexico. One was found approximately 5 years ago that was tagged by KY Fish & Wildlife at Perryville Battlefield! We will be tagging in the fall, so stay tuned!
🦋🦋🦋

A monarch butterfly tagged in Northern Kentucky has completed a 1,600-mile migration to a sanctuary in Mexico, marking the first time this has occurred since the Queen City Pollinator Project began tagging monarchs in 2018. FULL STORY ⬇️

Things will be a little more quiet around here as me & my children mourn the loss of my best friend & love of my life, Bill. He was my biggest supporter in starting this chapter and took care of things at home (with our furry family) while I would spend the day at a park, in a field, or at a local event celebrating butterflies & nature. He would send me photos of butterflies he saw flying through downtown Lexington & most times he knew what the species was. We’ll be back online soon. 💙🦋💙

Unfortunately, we will not be able to help out tomorrow at the Arboretum for the City Nature Challenge. For personal reasons, I cannot step away from my family right now, unless it's on a solo trip for deep reflection and rest. I'm hoping, if the weather is good, to search my own neighborhood or nearby park to log my own findings into iNaturalist. We hope you do the same! Please visit the Arboretum tomorrow from 10AM until 2PM and also join the project named "City Nature Challenge 2026: Lexington-Fayette County, KY" on the app to see all the amazing things our local citizen scientists are finding! I can't wait to follow along!

On this Earth Day 🌎, we’d like to announce we are the recipients of a 2026 Environmental Action Grant from Columbia Gas of Kentucky & NiSource Charitable Foundation! Their annual program supports local environmental restoration & education projects. We have received $2000 to further our work within the central Kentucky area & beyond! 🦋

“Real environmental change happens at the local level, driven by people who care deeply about their communities,” said Kimra Cole, President and Chief Operating Officer of Columbia Gas of Kentucky. “Our Environmental Action Grant program allows us to invest in organizations doing the hands-on work — restoring natural spaces, protecting wildlife habitats, and helping neighbors connect
more closely with the environment.”

THANK YOU to both organizations for their continued support of our mission. 🦋🌎🦋
