Want to do more than watch change happen? Come help make it happen! 🤠

This school year, join KSVT and work alongside other students from across the Commonwealth to research, organize, advocate, and create real change in education.

One way to do that? Our legislative bill tracking team! They track education bills during the legislative session, educate our neighbors about the bill, and organize to shape policy.

There's a place for your voice here! Send a quick introduction paragraph about yourself and why you're interested to [email protected] to get looped in and join our team!

The Kentucky chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists recently awarded two of The New Edu student authors! 🏆

Riess Starks first place in editorial writing for a research-based commentary in The New Edu calling for expanded civics education.

Isabella Edghill third place in feature writing for her student journalism series in The New Edu.

This year’s entries were judged by professional journalists from Texas and New Jersey, making the recognition especially meaningful! Help us to congratulate them both!

Do you know when your next school board meeting is? Or what's on the agenda? Or why any of it matters?

We've been working in recent years to breakdown this information and mobilize students to attend, testify and serve as board members for their local school district.

Many decisions around budget, curriculum, staffing and day to day affects on students happen at the district and board level. When school starts in the fall, join us to get engaged with your local board!

Our legislative team has been fighting for student representation at every level of school governance this past year - one of them being school-based decision making councils.

If you're not familiar, according to Kentucky Department of Education: School-Based Decision Making (SBDM) councils in Kentucky are school-level governing bodies established by the Kentucky Education Reform Act (KERA). Consisting of parents, teachers, and the school principal, these councils were designed to decentralize authority and promote shared leadership to enhance student achievement.

🤔 What's missing? Students! Ismail from our team explains how we've been solving this problem!

After fourteen years, a new chapter begins.

Today, founding Board Chair Andrew Brennen announced he is stepping down from his role and passing the baton to Zoë Jenkins, a longtime KSVT student leader, alumna, and champion for youth voice.

Since 2012, KSVT students have helped secure a student seat on the Kentucky Board of Education, expanded college scholarship access, led groundbreaking research, launched an independent youth-led organization, and fought for more just and democratic schools across Kentucky.

Andrew's leadership helped build an organization rooted in a simple belief: students deserve real power, not just a seat at the table.

As Andrew steps away, we're excited to welcome Zoë as KSVT's next Board Chair. Zoë joined KSVT as a middle school student nearly a decade ago and has helped shape the organization through some of its most important moments. She now takes on this role with the experience, vision, and commitment to carry the work forward.

KSVT was built to be bigger than any one person. This transition is proof.

Thank you, Andrew. Congratulations, Zoë. ❤️
