POPE LEO’S SUMMIT … AND YOUR FAMILY LIFE

“The current Vatican summit on the 10-year anniversary of Amoris Laetitia—convened by Pope Leo XIV from Oct. 7-14—has the goal of finding more effective ways of “proclaiming the Gospel with families today.” But it may not be registering on your news feed, popping up in your dinner table conversation, or getting coverage in your pastor’s Sunday homily.

Nevertheless, it’s big. And even though it’s a closed-door meeting and the proceedings are largely confidential, we’d like to suggest that the summit can be a bridge to an important step in your own family’s deepening communion.“

FINDING OUR HOME IN THE TRINITY: FR. JAMES BRENT ON FAMILY AND COMMUNION

“We’ve long been drawn to the vision of the family as a place where we learn to live in communion—with God and with one another. That’s why we were especially excited to read Rev. James Brent O.P.’s The Father’s House: Discovering Our Home in the Trinity, which invites readers to see the Christian life through the lens of our identity as children of the Father and our call to participate in the life of the Holy Trinity.

In this interview, Fr. Brent shares the story behind the book, the challenges facing families today, and why he believes ordinary families can become places of love, peace, and communion even amid the noise and pressures of modern life. He also reflects on how family life can become a practical school of Trinitarian love—and offers a simple encouragement for families who may feel like they’re just trying to keep up with daily life.”

12 YEARS AGO THIS WEEK

“…By setting out to share “a little taste of heaven” at the corner of Church and Market Streets, our goal with Trinity House Café + Market was twofold: 1) give guests an immersive and peaceful experience of the joy of faith and community, and 2) inspire Christian families to reimagine their own home as a taste of heaven, a place where they too could host neighbors and friends. After all, the preeminent place of evangelization is the Christian home.

…We still marvel and give thanks for what God brought about 12 years ago this week. He showed us that His plans are not our plans. He showed us that it is enough to do our part, one day at a time. To take the next step. To ask for help. And to sing as we look back on the many ways Jesus has accompanied us at every step: My soul looks back in wonder, how I got over! Praise Him!”

YOUR NEW ALLY FOR FAMILY CULTURE

“The coming beatification (Sept. 24) of Venerable Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen (1895-1979) offers families potentially life-changing aid for an urgent problem. We look forward to sharing what that is, but first, let’s turn to the man of the hour.

Born in El Paso, Illinois, Fulton Sheen came of age in a fast-changing media environment. By the 1930s, he was on the forefront of embracing radio for the purposes of evangelization. Then, as televisions entered every living room in America, so did Fulton Sheen, with his famous Life is Worth Living program, watched by upwards of 30 million viewers (watch an episode with your family here, on EWTN’s YouTube channel).“

DO SMALL THINGS WITH GREAT LOVE

“Running late for Mass on a summer Sunday, we piled into a back pew as the opening hymn concluded. Then, as we looked around and got our bearings, we couldn’t help but notice a young mother a couple pews in front of us, sitting with her husband and baby who appeared to be their first child.

Yes, this mom was participating in the Mass. But she was also in absolute sync with her daughter, who went from nursing to being cleaned up, held, offered a toy in the car seat on the pew, and then held again. All through the Mass, the mother and daughter took turns initiating a smile that seemed to almost overtake them. When the mother looked away, the daughter would keep her eyes trained on her mother, expectant...

As St. Mother Teresa famously said, “Not all of us can do great things, but we can do small things with great love.” And as St. Therese of Lisieux wrote, “Miss no single opportunity of making some small sacrifice, here by a smiling look, there by a kindly word; always doing the smallest [thing] right and doing it all for love.”

YOUR BODY KEEPS THE SCORE

“…Here’s the truth of our early years of marriage (which we invite you not to repeat!): We radically underestimated the role that physical health plays in relationships!

Self-care can get a bad rap, for good reason. If it’s indulgent and happens in a world devoid of prayer, the sacraments, and the indwelling of the Holy Trinity, then yes, it can become a kind of disordered selfishness or in today’s parlance, “looksmaxxing.”

But Jesus tellingly said, “Love your neighbor as yourself.” The acceptance, respect, and care of the body God lovingly created is no small thing. It requires a kind of focus, attentiveness, and consistent care. Yes, we must care for our bodies and our psyches, and their woundedness or need for healing and growth, if we want to grow in love.”
