Thirty-six Border Collies have been freed from a Florida home after allegedly not being let outside for four years. The dogs were all covered from head to toe in dirt and f***s and kept in deplorable conditions. But it’s what was above the home’s front door that is catching dog lover’s attention. A beautiful stained-glass window depicted Border Collies happily walking through a green meadow with sheep.
The heartbreaking contrast of the rescued dogs with the stained glass window has rocked the Florida neighborhood of Palm City.
The investigation had been going on for years.
Neighbors had repeatedly raised concerns about the dogs, but authorities were unable to get permission from the owner and could not legally enter the home without probable cause. Since 2020, there had been multiple visits from several agencies and attempts to get a better look inside. At one point, the owner reportedly built a fence around the property to keep sheriff deputies from entering the property.
Eventually, authorities obtained a search warrant and this week they went inside. What they found was far worse than they had imagined.
"The animals themselves, the dogs, which are supposed to be Border Collies, beautiful dogs, are covered in f***s. They're supposed to be white and black dogs, and they're solid black from the f***s," said John Budensiek, Martin Co. Sheriff told the press. The conditions were so bad that deputies and animal services officers had to wear protective Tyvek suits while removing the dogs.
Authorities alleged that the dogs had been intentionally kept trapped inside the home and were not being allowed outside.
“She, on purpose, kept these dogs trapped in this jail that she has behind us and abused them for lack of a better word,” Sheriff John Budensiek said.
The homeowner, 62-year-old Paige O’Donnell, was arrested and faces 72 charges—36 felony counts of animal cruelty and 36 misdemeanor counts for failing to provide the dogs with proper exercise or air. A judge set her total bond at $275,000 and ordered that she not own or possess animals while on bond.
The case was especially heartbreaking because O’Donnell had reportedly been a well-established AKC Border Collie breeder "with lovely dogs", according to a commenter on the sheriff’s office page. "This is a heartbreaking case of mental illness and addiction. It’s not an excuse, but it is reality. Please don’t be afraid to reach out for help if you are struggling."
Now, the dogs are finally out. They were taken into the care of the Humane Society of Treasure Coast, where they are receiving medical attention, nourishment, grooming and care as their condition is evaluated.
For years, they had apparently known little beyond the walls of that house. Now they have a chance to discover what life outside those walls can be. They have a chance to achieve the life depicted in that beautiful stained-glass picture — one filled with freedom and happiness. ❤️🐾
