AFSCME-Michigan

AFSCME-Michigan Michigan's communities never rest. Streets need cleaning. Families need care. Students deserve well-run schools, and our neighborhoods demand safety. Fairness.

That’s why people who work in public service never stop. This isn’t just a job. It’s a calling. Nobody does this work to get rich. It’s hard work, and it’s largely unsung. The work matters because it means something to make a community better. In fact, it means everything. AFSCME believes that every person working to sustain their community better deserves respect. We show ours through action—figh

ting to secure opportunity for AFSCME members wherever, and whoever, they are. We negotiate better pay and benefits because fighting for every member’s future is a form of respect. We educate about the issues that keep working families up at night because informed advocates command respect. And we organize because respect is offered to individuals who build power together. When people in public service connect, big things happen. Equality. Democracy. AFSCME is the union that honors solidarity without conformity—drawing each member’s story into a force of experience and commitment that can’t be ignored. That’s how we win better lives for ourselves, our families, our communities, and our country. For people proudly committed to the public service that makes Michigan happen, we never quit.

Members at Local 2449 at Walter P. Reuther Psychiatric Hospital came together on May 20, 2026, for an afternoon of solidarity and delicious food at a membership picnic.

“Events like these allow us to connect with our current members and hear their concerns and share how our union is working to make improvements to our workplace," said Dorice Butler, president of Local 2449. "It also lets us meet potential members and have conversations about the importance of a union as a State of Michigan employee.”

When Connor Sergent first joined the Shiawassee County Road Commission (SCRC), he was hesitant to join the union. It wasn’t until he realized the mechanics department needed a louder voice that he finally got involved. Today, Sergent has taken his commitment a step further. He was recently elected Chapter Chair of his Local. He now encourages everyone to take an active part in their union. Sergent is a natural leader and a prime example of the heart of AFSCME: a dedicated public servant working to better his community.

A new rule proposed by the administration excludes nurses, social workers and others from being considered “professionals.” As a result, it restricts access to how much they can borrow in student loans for graduate school.

Submit a comment today. Tell the Department of Education: Nurses, social workers, and public health workers are professionals! Submit a comment at https://act.afscme.org/letters/tell-the-department-of-education-we-are-professionals/
