Geography with an actual globe, a teacher pointing out places on the map, and kids who keep pulling more books off the shelf. 🌎 In Waterford Montessori Academy's White Pine Classroom, they're also studying the Timeline of Life, a signature piece of the Montessori approach. Michigan families can choose a Montessori program at a tuition-free public charter, with no private-school bill attached.

Dinner, a slideshow, and a room full of parents taking notes on anxiety. Marshall Academy's first Parent Academy put the school's School to Family Coordinator in front of families with practical coping strategies and resources they can use at the kitchen table the same night.

Charter public schools decide for themselves which roles to staff, and a coordinator whose whole job is connecting school and home says a lot about Marshall's priorities. 💙

School supplies, uniforms, and hygiene kits don't usually come from the same place — but this week, they did. New Grace Missionary Baptist Church and DTE Energy teamed up to make sure Barber Preparatory Academy students had what they needed to start the year right. Gaps like this rarely get filled by a school budget alone; it takes partners willing to show up with exactly what's missing.

Congratulations to Chalcee Norwood, September's ! 🎉

Chalcee serves as Dean of Operations for both MacDowell Preparatory Academy and Purpose Charter Academy — she started as a middle school science teacher and grew into the kind of leader who solves problems before anyone has to ask.

In her own words: "My favorite thing about my job would have to be the kids, of course... getting love from them, all of that just makes my day."

Beyond the MAPSA recognition, Chalcee also received a Testimonial Resolution from the Detroit City Council, signed by every council member. Well-earned, Chalcee!

While teaching kids about an important holiday, they usually need to understand themselves too — which is exactly where Ms. Teeples' kindergarten class at Aztec Eagles Academy Lower Elementary started during Hispanic Heritage Month. After reading "Alma and How She Got Her Name," students are headed home with one homework assignment: ask their own family where their name came from. 300+ minutes in both Math and ELA on Freckle, all summer long — that's not a small ask for kids on break. Mt. Clemens Montessori Academy's students put in the work anyway, and their reward showed up in a bowl. 🍨 As one of Michigan's Montessori charter schools, MCMA builds its entire program around a specific educational philosophy families choose on purpose — summer learning habits like this one are part of that culture, not an outlier. When Jennifer Dalal was named August's , we didn't tell the full story behind her recognition. Now we are — and the numbers are staggering.

Frontier International Academy Elementary's third-graders were projected to hit just 13.9% literacy proficiency based on poverty levels and other factors. The actual result: 59.5% — more than four times the projection and 20 points above the state average. At a school where 63% of students are English Language Learners, that's not a small win.

The recognition didn't stop at the award ceremony either: State Representative Mai Xiong recently visited the school to present Jennifer with a legislative tribute from the State of Michigan. And in Jennifer's own words, the credit belongs to the whole team: "I can ask people to do things, but if they don't follow through, then it doesn't work. But all the teachers, all the educators, they follow through."
