Su***de Prevention Month: Supporting Veterans & Our Communities

One small act can make a difference in the life of a Veteran, Service member, friend, family member, or coworker who may be struggling.

September is Su***de Prevention Month, a time to raise awareness, encourage conversations, and connect people with support. While the Veterans Crisis Line remains a vital resource for Veterans and Service members, the warning signs of emotional distress and su***de risk can affect anyone.

Know the Warning Signs

Pay attention to signs such as:
- Hopelessness or feeling trapped
- Anxiety, agitation, or significant mood changes
- Increased alcohol or drug use
- Anger or risky behavior
- Withdrawal from family, friends, or activities

Seek immediate help if someone is:
- Talking about su***de or wanting to die
- Thinking about self-harm
- Looking for ways to harm themselves
- Engaging in dangerous or self-destructive behaviors

Help Is Available

For Veterans, Service members, and their loved ones, the Veterans Crisis Line provides free, confidential support 24 hours a day, 7 days a week:
- Call: 988 and Press 1
- Chat: VeteransCrisisLine.net
- Text: 838255

For anyone experiencing a mental health, substance use, or emotional crisis, help is available through the 988 Su***de & Crisis Lifeline:
- Call or Text: 988
- Free, confidential support available 24/7
- Local Support Through CHD

In addition to national crisis resources, live, local support is available through the Center for Human Development (CHD). If you or someone you know is struggling with mental health concerns, substance use, or life challenges, CHD offers a range of services and professionals who can help connect individuals with the care and support they need.

You do not have to face a crisis alone. Reaching out for help is a sign of strength, and support is available both locally and nationally.

This Su***de Prevention Month, take a moment to check in with the people around you. A conversation, a caring question, or a connection to resources can make a significant difference.
No one can do everything, but everyone can do something. One small act could help save a life.

šŸŽ’ September is National Preparedness Month!

Having an emergency kit ready is an important part of staying prepared. Emergencies can vary in length and intensity, so aim to have several days of nonperishable food and at least 1 gallon of water per person, per day.

Include medications, flashlights, batteries, chargers, first aid supplies, and other essentials. And don’t forget supplies for kids, older adults, and pets! šŸ¶šŸ’§šŸ”¦

You don’t need everything at once. Start with what you have and build your kit over time, and for a full list of recommended items, visit Ready.gov.

Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) doesn’t exist in a vacuum. It can intersect with many areas of a person’s life, including mental health, learning, relationships, and daily living.

Instead of asking, ā€œIs it FASD or something else?ā€ we can start asking, ā€œWhat does this person need, and how can we support them?ā€

An ā€œFASD &ā€ conversation recognizes that there can be more than one piece to someone’s story, and that understanding the whole person is an important part of providing meaningful support. ā¤ļø

This month, CHD is encouraging more understanding, more conversation, and more person-centered support for individuals and families impacted by FASD.
