Travel across the Pacific NW will be difficult to impossible in the next several days. Winds gusting up to 60 mph combined with heavy snowfall has led to Blizzard Warnings and Winter Weather advisories/warnings. Forecasts indicate 1-4 feet of snow is likely in the Cascades, with locally higher amounts. Check with your local National Weather Service for specific details:

Here's a look at our Travel SnøStorm Dashboards this morning. As you can tell, most of the West is being impacted by winter conditions, with many roads having packed snow (red lines). Several highways on the Oregon Coast are closed due to falling trees and over a dozen roads are closed in Wyoming due to zero-visibility conditions. Happy New Years to everyone! In 2022, our Wildfire Map, SnøStorm Dashboards, and other online products served 3.2 million people (20% more than 2021). We're looking forward to another successful year! Throwback to our top post in 2022: a ~100 vehicle pile up in Northeast Oregon.

Apparently we have decided to skip fall and go straight from summer to winter. October was one of the warmest on record! But now, snow is falling across the West. Before traveling (especially with Thanksgiving coming up), make sure you check road conditions on our SnøStorm Dashboards. You can also find current weather, freezing levels, webcams, and more. https://www.fireweatheravalanche.org/winter/snostorm/road-weather-conditions

A robust cold front will move across the West tomorrow, continuing east on Saturday, causing temperatures to plummet. Lots of moisture will come with this frontal passage, so expect to see snow this weekend above 4000 ft (on average, depending on location). Temperatures could be 10-20° colder than it has been, or 50° colder like it will be in West Yellowstone on Sunday night.

Weather forecast models are advertising "a highly anomalous wind event...expected beginning as early as mid-morning Friday morning." Wind speeds could be up to 55 mph and with low humidity and dry fuels, fire weather is a major concern. Power companies in Western Oregon have stated they may have to turn power off.

Oregonians should prepare for evacuations and power outages as hot temperatures and strong winds increase the fire risk.

The Rum Creek Fire, 16 miles NW of Grants Pass, OR, started August 17th around 12pm from a lightning strike. It is currently around 9,500 acres this evening. Josephine County Sheriff's Office has issued several evacuations in the area and ODF's Type II Team 1 has joined NW13 IMT, and Oregon Office of State Fire Marshal in unified command. We have added a layer for evacuations to our Wildfire Map (under "planning tools") so you can see the evacuations in detail. More details at www.fireweatheravalanche.org/fire.
