Greater Hells Canyon Council

Greater Hells Canyon Council Go to our website at www.hellscanyon.org to learn more about us and get involved in our work. But it is not solely the canyon which we protect. You. So join us!

Eastern Oregon and Idaho are the home of one of our national treasures: Hells Canyon. Hells Canyon is the deepest canyon in North America (yes, deeper than the Grand Canyon!). In this gorgeous area, you might find yourself in low deserts of varying cactus and prickly pear, or high in alpine forests perfect for all types of recreation, in winding waters, or on a cliffside spotting wildlife in the s

oft light of a setting sun. The canyon itself is part of the Wallowa Whitman National Forest, and is home to Bighorn sheep, mountain goats, wolves, grizzly bears, elk, and many other species. Our efforts are much further reaching. The large area, including Umatilla and the Blue Mountains, holds many keystone habitats and communities and is vital for the diversity of the Northwest! These wildlands are known to be an important "linchpin" that essentially "holds together" surrounding ecosystems. Thus, it is an invaluable patch in our nation's tapestry of natural treasure and needs to be preserved as such. What it will take? Greater Hells Canyon Council truly needs your help protecting and restoring this area from habitat degradation, invasive species, loss of native species, wildlife, and more. Check out our website or talk to us for more info, and choose to donate to support us as we fight to thrive in harmony. Every dollar counts with this type of work, and it all goes back to the earth that sustains us. To preservation!

We are deeply concerned by reports of widespread firings within the U.S. Forest Service and other key federal agencies—all in the name of "efficiency." Experienced staff dedicated to managing our forests, wildlife, and recreation areas are being let go, leaving a dangerous gap in public lands stewardship.

While the full extent of these firings remains unclear, it is evident that they will create a significant gap in public lands management— No one wins in this scenario. These moves will lead to more litigation, more polarization, and worsening conditions for fish, wildlife, and the public.

We are committed to doing all that we can to ensure that the Blues remain a key migration corridor, biodiversity hotspot, and refuge for people and animals alike.

📢 Take action! Contact your Congressional representatives and demand an end to these reckless firings.

📣 Check this out! 📣
GHCC’s Conservation Director Jamie Dawson was recently featured in a Columbia Insight article on the Morgan Nesbit logging project outside of Joseph:

“The history of logging in Oregon has always been a series of rebranding efforts to see what is the most palatable phrase for them to still be able to meet their timber targets,” says Dawson. “Words like ‘resiliency’ can be attached to anything from a terrible logging campaign that we really dislike to something like Morgan Nesbit that’s just super-complex and needs to be treated as such.”

Adjacent to Eagle Cap Wilderness, nearly half of the Forest Service’s massive Morgan Nesbit project lies within the National Recreation Area Shaky standing: Near Big Sheep Creek within the Morgan Nesbit Forest Resiliency Plan area, the Grossman Stand of ponderosa pine (foreground)
