Whooo knew there was so much behind one owl?🦉

Today's How It's Made tour took us inside Dalen Products, where COO Bob Teska showed us how their iconic Scare Owl comes to life right here in Knoxville.

We followed the process from molding to painting (including a painting robot named after founder Neal Caldwell) to assembling each owl's eyes and beak before they're packaged and shipped across the country.

Of course, Dalen couldn't let us just watch... we had to get our hands dirty. Two teams raced to assemble and package four owls, and the winning team took home a Scare Hawks!

One of our favorite fun facts from the day? Dalen's Great Horned Owl decoy even helped protect Space Shuttle Discovery from woodpeckers in the 1990s!

BUT ‼️ What stood out most wasn't just the owls or there other innovative products. It was the people and the vision behind it.

Dalen has invested in new equipment that's bringing manufacturing back to East Tennessee, using automation to help their team produce more while continuing to grow. They're expanding their facilities, creating more year-round jobs, and building on a family legacy that's been rooted in Knoxville for more than 50 years.

Who knew TWO years could fly by so fast? Not us, and probably not our Office Coordinator, Jan Hrivnak, who we’re sure had NO idea what she was getting herself into when she agreed to fill a part-time position that finally put a real live human being back at our front window! 🫣

Jan came to us through a referral from one of our board directors who knew she was looking to go back to work as her kids were at or near college age, and knew we needed someone to take care of all the “little” things that pile up quickly for a small team like ours. Since then, Jan has become an essential part of this office taking care of all thing administrative, keeping event supplies at the ready, prepping meeting materials, running new member packets to the post office, and as of this year she’s even taken over scheduling all weekly networkings and ribbon cuttings (and let me tell you; several of us here have had that job—it’s NOT easy😶).

Julie often says Jan is the “office mom” she herself never knew she needed. You won’t meet Jan at events because her key role is to keep our office open Monday-Thursday during normal business hours, something we previously couldn’t make happen.

So come on by, introduce yourself and tell her congratulations on her two year workerversary! THANK YOU Jan for all the things you do for the Chamber! 💙 Even leaving post-it notes to remind us which stapler NOT to use. 🤣

"There is an entire section in the bookstore dedicated to self help, but no section called help others."

That quote from Simon Sinek's Find Your Why, shared by Volunteer Ministry Center's Shalee Allen, offered a simple way to think about the work being done at VMC.

We heard from several members of the VMC team about their mission and the work they do every day to help neighbors facing homelessness. Volunteer Ministry Center's mission is to prevent and end homelessness through compassion, accountability and results.

Through housing, case management, and ongoing support, they meet people where they are and walk alongside them as they build stability and independence. Behind every service offered is a person working toward a better future.
