Friday, June 12 — read John 3:25-26
“Then there arose a dispute between some of John’s disciples and the Jews about purification. And they came to John and said to him, ‘Rabbi, He who was with you beyond the Jordan, to whom you have testified—behold, He is baptizing, and all are coming to Him!’l
”Church disputes.” So apparently they’ve been going on for a long time, and this one is about purification and ‘people stealing.’ First, some were arguing about purification, religious do’s and don’ts, as the struggle for balance between grace and legalism was (and is) ongoing, and some believe that our works, our good deeds, and our piety are the keys to salvation. In truth, it is “by grace that we are saved, through faith, not of works, lest anyone should boast” (Ephesians 2:8-9).
As for the ‘people stealing,’ more people were following Jesus since He started ministering, and fewer were following John the Baptist. Is that a problem? For the pastors, ushers, bookkeepers, and Sunday School teachers, it was as their numbers were dwindling, which is a very real struggle in many churches today; however, it was not a problem for John as he was sent to point people to Jesus, and his response was, “He must increase and I must decrease ” (John 8:30). Sadly, many attend church today for reasons of preference vs purpose, to be served rather than to serve, and to be fed by others vs preparing and bringing a dish to help feed others (speaking in physical and spiritual terms). The church should not be a competition, nor should it be all about numbers; rather, it ought to be a house of prayer, worship, serving, loving, caring, growing, teaching, and pointing people to follow Jesus as “He should be increasing in our lives and we decrease.
More of Jesus, less of me. It can help take care of both disputes.
