Friday, June 12 — read John 3:25-26
“Then there arose a dispute between some of John’s disciples and the Jews about purification. And they came to John and said to him, ‘Rabbi, He who was with you beyond the Jordan, to whom you have testified—behold, He is baptizing, and all are coming to Him!’l
‭”Church disputes.” So apparently they’ve been going on for a long time, and this one is about purification and ‘people stealing.’ First, some were arguing about purification, religious do’s and don’ts, as the struggle for balance between grace and legalism was (and is) ongoing, and some believe that our works, our good deeds, and our piety are the keys to salvation. In truth, it is “by grace that we are saved, through faith, not of works, lest anyone should boast” (Ephesians 2:8-9).
As for the ‘people stealing,’ more people were following Jesus since He started ministering, and fewer were following John the Baptist. Is that a problem? For the pastors, ushers, bookkeepers, and Sunday School teachers, it was as their numbers were dwindling, which is a very real struggle in many churches today; however, it was not a problem for John as he was sent to point people to Jesus, and his response was, “He must increase and I must decrease ” (John 8:30). Sadly, many attend church today for reasons of preference vs purpose, to be served rather than to serve, and to be fed by others vs preparing and bringing a dish to help feed others (speaking in physical and spiritual terms). The church should not be a competition, nor should it be all about numbers; rather, it ought to be a house of prayer, worship, serving, loving, caring, growing, teaching, and pointing people to follow Jesus as “He should be increasing in our lives and we decrease.
More of Jesus, less of me. It can help take care of both disputes.

Thursday, June 11 — read John 3:14-15
“And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.”
‭‭In the 21st chapter of the Book of Numbers, the people were being bitten by poisonous snakes which came into the camp as a result of their rebellion and sin against God…and people began to die; but God had Moses put a bronze replica of the serpents on a pole, and He said that any who look to the bronze serpent will be saved. Of course the bronze serpent had no special powers, but as they looked at the serpent by faith they were healed and did not die. As Jesus was speaking to Nicodemus in today’s passage, He made the comparison of His own life and mission to that of the serpent on the pole, for He was to be lifted on a cross for the sins of the world, and any who looked to Him in faith would be saved.
The only cure for our sins and the wages of sin (which is death) is putting our faith and trust in Jesus for salvation. “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and you will be saved” (Acts 16:31).

Wednesday, June 20 — read Matthew 11:28-30
“Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”
How do we handle life when we feel taxed, burdened, heavy, tired, weary, and days seem long and hard? Jesus gave us a solution that comes in three steps: 1) Come to me, 2) Take My yoke upon you, and 3) Learn from me.
1 - Come to Jesus with your burdens, cares, and weariness, because He cares for you and is a safe refuge and strength, a shelter in your struggle and storm. 2 - Take Jesus’ yoke upon you, which is to be holed with Him and let Him help you with the “pulling;” but also to do what He’s asking of you, as we sometimes find ourselves doing or expecting more that He’s asking. 3 - Learn from Me, which is to discover how to do life, endure difficulties, and handle situations like Jesus did…praying, yielding, obeying, trusting, and resting in the Father’s love and care.

Tuesday, June 9 — read Daniel 3:17-18
“Our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and He will deliver us from your hand, O king. But if not, let it be known to you, O king, that we do not serve your gods, nor will we worship the gold image which you have set up.”
Shadrack, Meshack, and Abed-nego were told to bow to a great big idol when the music began to play; however, they refused to bow and worship an idol as they were devoted and committed only to the Lord God. When the king threatened that they would be thrown into a fiery furnace, these young men did not bow, flinch, or waver in their faith and commitment; rather, they stood in defiance of the king’s decree, trusting God to protect them…but even if He didn’t (and they perished) they still would not bow. These were fully devoted followers of the Lord on the mountain and in the valley, in sunshine and rain, in good times and bad, in peace and in danger, following the words of Joshua so long ago, “As for me and my house we will serve the Lord.”
May we stand in faith today with the same love, commitment, and resolve.

Monday, June 8 — read Jeremiah 33:8
“I will cleanse them from all their iniquity by which they have sinned against Me, and I will pardon all their iniquities by which they have sinned and by which they have transgressed against Me.”
‭‭The wages of sin is death, Romans 6:23 tells us, but the gift of God given to us is eternal life; however, that gift came at a great expense, the death of God’s Son so that we might have life. Why? God loved the world so much that He gave His only Son for the purpose of cleansing, pardoning, and reconciling us back to Him. In truth, we owed a great debt that could never be paid, and God chose to pay our debts that He never owed. Which gives incredible and eternal meaning and value to the phrase, “To err is human; to forgive is divine.”
🎶 Thank you Lord for saving my soul, thank you Lord for making me whole; thank you Lord for giving to me, Thy great salvation so rich and free. 🎶

Friday, June 5 — read Jeremiah 33:17-18
“For thus says the Lord: ‘David shall never lack a man to sit on the throne of the house of Israel; nor shall the priests, the Levites, lack a man to offer burnt offerings before Me, to kindle grain offerings, and to sacrifice continually.’”
God had promised that there would always be a king and a priest of His choosing over Israel; however, none would ever be adequate for the task of leading righteously or bringing righteousness to the people…except One. A “Righteous Branch” was promised to come and lead as King and Priest of God’s people, sitting on the throne of David, and it was fulfilled in Jesus Christ. Rather than offering sacrifices continually, He laid down His life and offered Himself, His own blood, once for all, and then He sat down at the right hand of God as King of Kings and Lord of Lords!
“Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need” (Hebrews 4:16). Thank You Lord for access!

Thursday, June 4 — read Jeremiah 33:1-3
“Moreover the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah a second time, while he was still shut up in the court of the prison, saying, “Thus says the Lord who made it, the Lord who formed it to establish it (the Lord is His name): ‘Call to Me, and I will answer you, and show you great and mighty things, which you do not know.’”
‭‭God showed up to meet with and talk to Jeremiah…while he was in prison…not to let him out, but to encourage him while he was in ‘doing time.’ Of course Jeremiah wasn’t in prison for his sins or wrongdoings; but for the sins and wrongdoings of others. Remember Joseph, John the Baptist, Peter, the Disciples, and Paul were all imprisoned in a similar manner; yet they remained faithful to God in spite of it. We may not be in a literal prison, as those men were, or as many believers are in various places in the world today; but whatever hard spot, shut in spot, hurtful spot, or lonely spot we find ourselves in, the Lord sees you, cares for you, visits you, and will answer you when you call on Him.
Remember how you get to make one phone call? Call on the Lord! (Not once, but often.) Rejoice in the Lord! (Not once but often.) Put your trust and hope in Him! (Not once but often.) He will hear, answer, and help you through victoriously!
