ABOUT ALZHEIMER'S:
Alzheimer’s disease is not a normal part of aging. It is a progressive disease of the brain for which there is no cure. While it is not uncommon to occasionally forget things or lose items, when memory problems get in the way of everyday living, it is time to contact us for more information or see your doctor. One in 20 people ages 65 to 74 have Alzheimer’s disease, and nearly half of those age 85 and older may have the disease (source CDC). Now, more than ever, there is a need to provide education, services and support groups for those afflicted with this incurable, terminal illness that steals both memory and dignity. November is Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month, and today we had the opportunity to discuss it live on WBIR 10 News at Noon—and to share our excitement for the upcoming “Did You Know? Alzheimer’s Disease vs. Normal Aging” Video Premiere with Beth Haynes! Kay Watson joined anchor Katie Inman to highlight why awareness matters, along with special guest Doug Harris, a professional musician who leads harmonica sessions for local physical therapy groups.

Doug explained that playing the harmonica isn’t just great for breathing—which supports brain health—it’s also a fun way to keep the mind active by learning new skills. Making music together also builds social connection and engagement, both of which help reduce risk factors for Alzheimer’s.

Doug will be at the premiere next Wednesday, offering a hands-on harmonica experience. Plus, Dr. Monica Crane, who is featured in the video, will be there to discuss what’s normal when it comes to aging and memory—and what might be cause for concern. She’ll answer your questions and provide expert guidance.

Come walk the purple carpet and meet Beth Haynes!

Join us November 4, 10:30 a.m.–1:00 p.m. at Laurel Church of Christ (3457 Kingston Pike, Knoxville). Admission is free—please RSVP at the website in the comments or call us at 865-544-6288.

We’re grateful to WBIR 10 News for sharing the story of our 34th annual Smoky Mountain Walk to Make Alzheimer’s a Memory! Thank you for helping us shine a light on local families, dedicated caregivers, and the ongoing fight to end Alzheimer’s. Together, we’re making a difference!

The walk was Saturday but fundraising efforts are still underway. You can still contribute to this Walk or your walk team. All money raised stays local to help local families - such as the upcoming Caring and Coping Workshop in Sevierville on Tuesday, October 3. These workshops are free and is a day of education, encouragement and inspiration.

Look in the comments for links to both the Smoky Walk and Caring and Coping Workshops.
